Show FEDERAL STATE AND COUNTY IN ACCORD ne returning turning from a conference held friday with the federal and state authorities and representatives pathe p the denver rio grande western railroad the county commissioners ot of sevier county brought home the good news of a tentative agreement tor for the elimination of dangerous railroad crossings of the state highway over over the salina canyon branch ot of the denver rio hlo grande western railroad according to this agie agreement ement which ol of course Is subject to final approval by the V TJ S forest service and the rali railroad company eighteen crossings will ill be eliminated cooperatively the forest service to contribute one third of 0 the cost coat which la Is estimated at the state road commission one hard thad and sevier county countr abere abe tie remaining third the necessary work Is expected to be finished by november 1930 and it if this program materializes sevier county will receive a substantial increase in taxes by putting the tha coal mines in salina canyon a as well as the railroad the tax rolls and there will be created also a steady payroll the conference was quite extended and those participating were it H rutledge go district forester ot of the ogden office i 13 J finch district engineer ot of the bureau of public roads chairman it 11 blood and preston G peterson of 0 the state stafe road commission vice president and general manager A 0 sh shields t eld 9 and ant chief engineer cozan of the D it G western railroad chairman moroni jensen and commissioner I 1 D G burgess and GA G A staples ot of the board boar dof ot county commissioners the state road commission according to ter a previous promise had prepared a survey and estimate ot of a vehicle road through canyon and it was brought out that the construction st ot of a standard highway through the canyon would require an expense ot of which at the present time would be out of reach there was however a preliminary improvement suggested whereby eighteen of 0 the crossings could be eliminated at a cost of 0 and this would leave only the ten crossings and one undershot allowed by an agree agreement ment between the railroad authorities and the railroad company as as reached in 1902 the main india handicap in reaching the preliminary agreement was waa the question ot of raising the money and only after our county commissioners had opened the way for an understanding by agreeing to furnish one third of the cost amounting to district ais engineer rutledge agreed to recommend to the authorities thorit ties les an appropriation of oe one third and the state road commission tell fell in line by promising the remain inc third the railroad company through mr shields showed commendable willingness to cooperate with the other authorities by agreeing to make the necessary excavations for their own use in places where excavating will be ba necessary to establish the road and by promising to take up the traffic to and from the coal mines when the eighteen crossings mentioned in the agreement will have been eliminated it was brought out at the meeting that there are several other road projects over forest preserves ot of immediate importance and that it was the purpose of tho the present project only to make the road a usable one and allow tor for the railroad to complete its branch line in III order norderto to 0 serve the coal districts 16 in salina 2 canyon reaper |
