Bigclow of Salt Lake City drove intoi Phoenix yesterday on,)a trip of investigation undertaken for the state of Utah, the object of which is to secure information on various possible routes and methods of inter-connecting .tbe good roads .sysj. terns of the'intyfti3untiri statw. H-J is conpected, officially with the Utah state highway committee. "Because of geographical conditions condi-tions in Utah an attempt is being made to co-ordinato road construction so "that the northwestern part of Arizona Ari-zona and the southeastern part of Nevada (i. e., the cattle and sheep grazing sections) will connect at St. George with the Utah state highway, the Arrowhead trail," said Mr. Bige-low. Bige-low. "The connecting line between Arizona and St. George will probably prob-ably be the means of a bridge across the Colorado at some point to be selected se-lected in Mohave county. "The Nevada connqction will probably prob-ably bo to Las Vegas, Nevada, thence south, one brnnch going to San Diego via the Imperial valley, the other branch westerly to Los Angeles via the 'Old Trails' route. "This work has become of extreme interest at this time because of the effort now being mado to unify tho construction work along the Colorado ,river, which will include" flood-water storage, principally on the Green and Grand rivers, and which will mnin'tain a perennial flow on tho, Colorado, sufficient suf-ficient to bring hundreds of thousands thous-ands of acres, now desert .waste, under un-der cultivation on the Colorado and its tributaries. "On Sept. 23, 1918, a meeting of representative men of the state of Utah was called by Gov. Bamberger at tho state capitol in Salt Lake, to devise ways and means to bring about unity of action in that political tentity of tho west commonly known as tho inter-mountain region. Committees Com-mittees on resolution nnd presentation, presenta-tion, headed by ex-Gov. Spry, were formed, later to be followed by a call to the interested western states for n meeting to be held at some centrally located city to work out plans that will aid Secretary Lane in his effort to securo actual commencement of work on tho Colorado basin development develop-ment immediately upon the conclusion conclu-sion of tho war. Mr. Bigelow is at present recon-noitering recon-noitering to secure a good idea of the exact situation, to report to the governor gov-ernor of Utah, and to find most feasible feas-ible road connection permitting ncess from various irrigated or to-be-irri-gated sections of the inter-mountain region. Mr. Bigelow reports directly to J, H. Mnnderfield of tho Utah state highway transport committee. Phoenix Phoe-nix (Arizona) Republican. W.S.S |
