Show ALLOWED TO LAND. Porto Hican Charg-ed With. Violating Contract Labor Law. "Washington, April 4. Secretary Gage today passed on the case of Jorge Cruse, a native of Porto Rico who was detained at Ellis Island, New York, and ordered deported, on the charge that he had violated vio-lated the contract labor laws. In his telegram tele-gram to the commissioner of immigration at New York Secretary Gage says: "You will allow Jorge Cruz, to land, the department reserving the right to depart him at any time within one year and to bring suit for $1,000 penalty against the person or corporation assisting, encouraging, encourag-ing, or soliciting him to ooine under contract. con-tract. "It appears that Cruz came without knowledge that he was in violation of the law if he be here in violation of law. It further appears that he, was brought here to make a moot case and not in good faith, as a contract laborer. This being an isolated case, public interests are not affected by allowing him to land subject to future deportation. "Legislation now pending in congress may change the present status. The department de-partment prefers to teat tho question. by. bringing suit to recover penalty imposed by law upon the person who brought Cruz Into this country under contract. The matter will be referred to the department depart-ment of justice with request to take such action in this direction as the case may justify." |
