Show The Gunnison Valley Gazette Page 8 Thursday, September 7, 2006 BULLDOGS Continued from Page 6 put together a nice run, but Gubeli was again forced to punt just before the half. The Wildcats began the second half by receiving the kickoff and then marching downfield for their fourth touchdown of the evening. The extra point was again good. The first series of downs for the boys didn't go as well. The dogs ran 3 times and only picked up a few yards, then on fourth and seven, the Wildcats picked off the ball and returned it to the Dog's 38 yard line. The Wildcats then had a 13 yard run, a 9 yard pass completion and ran three straight quarterback keepers. On the third one they punched into the end zone for their fifth touchdown of the evening, and like the previous four times, the point after was again good. On the kickoff, Colton Lund received the ball and had a nice return to the Dog's 31. Then after a couple of •penalties and a couple of plays that didn't go anywhere, the Dogs faced a 4th down and 31 and were again forced to punt. The third quarter ended with the dogs trailing by a score of 35-7. The fourth quarter began with the Wildcats heading down field but they were stopped with a 4th and 13 and everyone thought they would punt for the first time. But it wasn't to be as the coach sent his senior kicker Brandon Bateman in to try the 45 yard field goal. A fortyfiveyard field goal is something you rarely see in high school, in fact that is a tough kick for even the college and pro ranks. But Bateman proved he has talent when he split the uprights with plenty of leg to spare. I think that kick would have been good from 55-60 yards out. Even the dejected Bulldog fans applauded when they witnessed that performance. The Bulldogs began their next series of downs with a great kick re- Steer Riding • Mutton Bustm' Roping • Lois of Fun! The Cats then killed the clock and the game ended with a score of Wildcats 38 Bulldogs 7. Now I can't help but think that football is somewhat of a number's game. Last year, the Bulldogs dressed 17 Seniors and they had the best year ever in GVHS football. This year we have thirty four players on the roster and only seven seniors. (Now with injuries, we are down to five). Compare that with Kanab, who we faced in the first game, who dressed fifty-five players and had twelve seniors, or with South Summit who dress fourty-two player, nineteen of which are seniors. I asked Coach Jackson about this and he said that senior experience and physical strength is truly an asset. But then he proved he wasn't making excuses when he added "you have to play the hand you're dealt". Gunnison travels to Manti this Friday evening to take on their biggest rivals, the Templars. The game begins at 7:00 p.m. Let's all get out and support the Bulldogs. turn by Matthew Harris out to the fifty yard line. Jackson then connected with Henry Hammond on a 34 yard pass play. On the next play, Jackson was sacked for an 8 yard loss. On second down, J*ace Anderson took the hand off and ran for 17 yards. From there, the drive was stopped cold and the Dogs turned the ball over on downs inside the ten yard line. The Wildcats didn't go anywhere on their next possession and were forced to punt for the first time of the evening. The Bulldogs were called for a ticky-tack penalty on the punt as Ashton waved both hands in the air to signal a fair catch. According to the rules, you are only permitted to wave one arm. On the Bulldogs final drive of the night, Jackson was sacked onfirstand second downs. Then on third down, Jace Anderson exploded through the line for a 22 yard gain. On the next play, Jackson's pass was tipped in the air and picked off by the Wildcats.
