Show DAVIS REFLEX JOURNAL, JANUARY 30, 1985 Falcons Get Second Chance On Feb. 7th By KEITH DUNCAN ITS THE same Journal Sports demonstrated in CLEARFIELD - There are a few of us that go through life and mess up a great opportunity and never get a second chance. -- BUT THEN there is the Clearfield High wrestling team which gets a second chance. It was just a year ago that Scott Tennis Clearfield High wrestling team the record books by defeating Box Elder at Box Elder in a dual match. That kind of thing hadnt been done in many, many te seasons. IT WAS just a short stint after that that the Falcons met with the other five region teams for the 1984 Region One wrestling cham- pionships. The Falcons had a chance to knock off the Bees in tournament action but melted under the pressure and never quite gained their composure after that. But wait a minute. ole story being 1985. Clearfield has done it again as they knocked off a good Box Elder Bee team by six points in a Region One dual meet. It was the same Clearfield team that had been dealt a bad loss from Box Elder at the Brighton Dual Meet Tournament. Yes, Clearfield gets another chance at beating the Bees in region tournament action, something which hasnt been done for secutive seasons. 1 1 con- tinez at 145 where he is undefeated in Region One. His greatest effort came earlier against Laytons Brent Higgs where the two tied 4-- 4 in their dual match. John Walters is still undefeated at 98 pounds and is headed for the region meet against stiff competi- tion. ALSO UNDEFEATED in region to this point are Merrill Johnson and Todd Kopecky. A surprise on the Clearfield team has been the emergence of Eve Flores. He has yet to be beaten in Region One. er THAT CHANCE comes February 7th at Box Elder High as all region teams converge on that site for the 1985 Region One Wrestling Championships. Before the region meet, Clear- field will travel to Weber this Thursday night for their final dual meet of the season. If they win there they will be awarded their second straight Region One dual meet crown. DOING exceptionally well for the Falcons has been Mark Mar ALSO UNDEFEATED in Region One is heavyweight Dennis Langford who is looking better each week. Two kids that have lost only one match include Scott Ferrin and Gene Smith. ITLL BE a dogfight when we meet Box Elder," said Tennis as he looked forward to the Region One championship tournament. Hansen Optimistic That Lancers Will Rebound By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports LAYTON Theres a saying on Wall Street that the stock market never goes down and stays down. At Layton High the same kind of saying could be applied to the wrestling program in that Mike Hansens program will never go down and stay down. BUT IT just happens that this is one of those years where Hansen's team is down and there isn't a whole lot anyone can do about it. Layton is 1 in dual meets but will face a very strong Box Elder team this Thursday night in Brigham City. Hansen will then come home for a week to prepare for the 1985 Region One Wrestling Championships to be held again at Box Elder High on Feb. 7. 3-- ONE VERY bright spot on the Layton team this season has been the effort of senior Brent Higgs at 145. Higgs has lost only one match all season long and is presently undefeated in region competition. He should win the region title at his weight. Higgs, a close friend of Hansen, has been the unquestionable leader on the team this year and before its all over should be a very formiable foe to win it all at his weight. Box Elder. Continued ling supremacy gets its stiffest test in the past three years as the Darts take on the Highland Rams this Thursday night in a dual match and then next Thursday, Feb. 7, in the Region Four Wrestling Championships at Woods Cross High School. BOTH DAVIS and Highland are undefeated in dual matches this year and who ever wins Thursday will win the 1985 dual meet championship. Highland has proved in recent tournaments they are a good tournament team. In the Viewmont Invitational the Rams outscored the Darts. It all stacks up to be a very interesting two weeks of wrestling, one in which Davis will have their hands full as they try to carry on a wrestling winning tradition that has brought them two region championships the past two seasons. JUSTIN Julander at 98 pounds still sports the best win-los- s percentage, having only been beaten once the entire season. He has been tied a couple of times, once by Clearfield and another-- by Box Elder. Reed Harrison, who moved into the area just as wrestling was getting started, has made a switch to 105 and still hasnt been beaten there. He has tied at 105 by Box Elder's Smoot whom Harrison was beating late in their match. BRUCE HINCKLEY still sports an undefeated record in Region Four competition and Vaughn Cas-dorp- has yet to be beaten in gion. The Darts match up well with the Rams. The 126 match with Hinckley and Highland's man should be a good match and the heavyweight match between Rody Meacham and Highlands 6-- 6 240 heavyweight should be interesting. THEHighland-Davi- s dual meet will take place at 7 p.m. this Thursday night in Kaysville. Davis Faces Key Battle With Vikings On Friday kids are shooting a good percentage, said Gardner, We really take it to people if our kids hit their first few baskets like we did against Highland when we got out to a 10-- 2 lead. THE DARTS were hot. They hit their first five shots from the field and from there Highland was never a factor in the game. With six minutes left the Darts were up by as many as 23 points. When the shtoting goes good, so do other things. Davis manhandled the bigger Ram team on the boards, holding them to two offensive rebounds in the entire first half. It rubbed off on David Kinard too, despite not getting into the scoring act, he had another great game. Overall, there were four Darts in double figures. Besides Lloyd and Meier having great games, Scott Moon tallied 12 and Mike Taylor put in 11 points. WE DO well when we get four in doubles," said Gardner. Why players shoot well in one is game and then awful in another a mystery to me. Casey had the same shots against Highland as he had against Bountiful. Maybe the key was that he hit his first few e against Highland and confidence-wiswas set for a great game, said Gardner. or five IF LLOYD, Meier, Moon and Taylor are on this Friday night in Bountiful, you can bet you'll get your money worth when Davis undefeated Vikings. Its it'll be a great almost a shoe-ibat-tlest- n game. For the past few years, these two schools have sported some pretty entertaining basketball. Last year both games went right down to the last shot or rebound, two games which Davis won by the way. VIEWMONTS Ron Johansen, who stated this year's team doesnt have a pure-bre- d superstar, commented, Mike Gardner has done anything he had to do in the past iouple of years to get a win over us, which is just the way it should be. But even though I like the guy, I think its time for us to turn things around and even the score. SOMETIMES ing knowing its a good feel- youve got a superstar that can get the job done inside or out, but this team blends together so well, weve done just fine without that kind of a basketball player. I believe in the past seven games weve had five different guys lead us in scoring. Brian Beecher, Viewmonts little point guard, has led the Vikings in scoring the past two games. Hell be one that Davis will have to hold down this week. ONE THING Johansen would like to accomplish this season, even though he admits it probably wont happen against Davis, is to win over someone. get a blow-ou- t Somehow these kids find a way of winning their games the close way. Weve managed to get ourselves some pretty big leads at times but seem to allow the opponents to come back," he said. The Viewmont kids, fresh off a 5 win over Woods Cross last Friday, feel they can win the region. Theyre thinking that way and I feel theyve got a good chance of doing it," said the coach. 52-4- BUT IN order to win the region, Johansen and his troops will have to bury Davis, a team Johansen has plenty of respect for. The thing that scares you about Davis is that theyve got five players that can all score and can all handle the ball extremely well. I've got a couple of kids whod Id be scared to death if they had the ball any considerable distance from the basket. All five of their starters are very agile kids. SAVE M 1 on any Redwing Shoe or Boot NOW THROUGH FEB. 2nd But the good thing for us, is that they've got to play at our place this Friday. IN TALKING about the past couple of years again, Johansen says his kids still remember the two extremely close games of last season. In one of those games Viewmont was ahead with five seconds left and got the rebound, only to have a boxing out foul called on them. The ensuing freethrows gave Davis the win. I still remember when Brian Taylor was playing and how Gardner stalled things out when Taylor got into foul trouble. Like 1 said, Gardner has found something to do to win. Its really developed into a technique-typ- e rivalry between the two schools. ALL I know is that Davis has taken a few away from us the past couple of years and wed really like to get one back this Friday. Viewmonts chances of evening things out a bit couldn't better. Theyve got the height and speed which has taken them to a top five ranking in both of Salt Lakes daily newspapers. Barton's Family Shoes h re- 4 3 No. Main, Bountiful |
