Show ! SOFTBALL EXPLOSION The diamonds are humming in Northern Davis County where softball has become a major past time. DAVIS REFLEX JOURNAL, JUNE 6, 1984 9 By KEITH DUNCAN ..Journal Sports SYRACUSE - If Laura Zaugg can leap the hurdles that challenge ; an athlete's undeniable urge to participate in the Olympics, just like she has learned to leap over them the past few months, we may end up seeing her in the 1988 games. -- ZAUGGS STORY is nearly incredible and the ending to it is nowhere in sight. Just last week, after graduating in cap and gown from Clearfield High School, she was back in track :gear again while competing in the I r;Great Southwest High School Track and Field Meet in Tempe, Ariz. on the campus of Arizona Estate. - ,4 j .4 4 HER EVENT was the womens hurdles, an event shed tnever competed in before prior to "the Davis High Track and Field In- TJOO meter vitational earlier son. I in the track sea-- , kinda landed in it by chance, for sure, said Zaugg. ep: And Zaugg was a sensation y - again, setting a new record in the JGreat Southwest Meet with a 43.95. That qualified her for the 0 National Junior Olympics which . will be held in a couple of weeks in 1 Los Angeles, the main event that will prelude the 84 Olympic p Games. . I I i IN SETTING the record, Zaugg did it against some of the finest competition in America. The Great Southwest gathering included participants from Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, West Texas and Southern California. ' Running the 300 meter hurdles was completely by chance according to Zaugg. Midway through the track season, she was considering making the 400 meters her event, and especially get serious about it because she hadnt yet qualified for state in that event. - ; 'j f BUT THAT idea soon nullified itself because we found out later that a team could only have two people in that event. Since Kris (Done) was doing so well with Stephanie (Clements), Coach (Bart) Thompson gave me my choice that I could either long jump, high jump or run the hurdles. 1 didn't feel : very consistent in the long jump and high jump, so I said what the heck, and decided on the hurdles. around it. Anyway, I crashed and tore a big hole in my knee, not too fun for the first time running the 300 meters. j IVE NEVER been so scared in all my life as I was in running that race for the first time, and to tell the truth it still scares me. Its the kind of scared that is different than what most people would think. Running the 300 meters in the Davis High meet was the kinda scared you have in falling off a cliff, but now its the pressure scared, said i Zaugg. As of Monday of this week, there were a few sure things about Zaugg s future as far as college goes. She defined them as, No. 1, Im going to go to college and No. 2, wherever I go. Im going to run in track. She hasnt made up her mind where to attend yet but it appears as if Brigham Young University and Weber State have the inside tracks on her attendance. Ive got some pretty good offers all over, she said. LAURA ZAUGG SCHOLAR AND ATHLETE BUT TRACK and field isnt all that has occupied Lauras time in high school. She has carried a respectable academic load which included AP English and the best speech and drama classes Clearfield could offer. Through it all Laura maintained a 3.9 grade point average in high school and was the Sterling Scholar for the school in speech and drama. Explosion Tatting Place In Local Recreation couldnt put track or drama ..1 above each other... in conflicts I had By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports Without having people like others confirm it, recreation activities in northern Davis County are exploding. : ; ' ; I i ( : AND I couldnt believe it, I be-- I gan winning in them. 1 set a new region record, then a new state record and finally broke the record in Arizona. DONT understand it. Maybe one reasdn Ive done so well is because I didnt have prior experience in it, so each time I got a little more experience I improved a little more, said Zaugg. I ZAUGG, WHO also for the first time, began running the 100 meter hurdles this year, truthfully said there was a scared feeling the first time she ran the 300 meter I race. 3 I remember the first time 1 ran them in practice I was coming toward the first hurdle and my steps were off just enough that 1 couldnt I jump over and too close to go to put into THE REASONS for the explosion vary, but its no secret that spring and summer recreation activities in communities like Clearfield, Layton, Kaysville and others are on all-tihighs. perspective. --Zaugg The talented track gal loves her drama too. At the end of the year banquet for speech and drama students, Laura received a couple of special awards. First she received the Outstanding Drama Student Award for the past three years distinction and in addition, her fellow schoolmates voted her the recipient of the Maximum Achievement Award. ITS BEEN a major part of my life, too, said Zaugg, Ive probably put in close to a 1000 hours in speech and drama over the past three years. During those years, I couldnt put track or drama above the other. Whenever there was a conflict between the two, I had to put it in perspective and decide which was most important at the time. I missed a track meet this year for a drama meet and on the other side, I missed the State Drama Meet for Davis High Track and Field Invitational. It had to go back and forth. Growing? asked Laytons Cook in reply to the question. It's unbelievable how its gone. Its a miracle we can keep up with it. 1988 Olympic hopeful, Laura Zaugg, just set a new record in the 300 meter hurdles at the Great Southwest High School Track and Field Meet at Arizona State. Shes now for the National Junior Olympics in Los Angeles later this month. pre-pavi- IN TRACK its been more of an individual accomplishment, with some team aspects too, but in drama it's been almost purely team work where you really learn to work with people. Overall, Laura said high school was a fabulous time of her life and said she got just about everything she wanted out of it. COUPLE of folks she credits much of her achievements for in A high school were her drama teacher, Norman Maxfield and Coach John Flint in track. Of course she has thought a lot of her three outdoor coaches, Judy Allen, Roger Buhrley and Bart Thompson, but Flint has been there through all of it. On the track side, Zaugg commented about Flint saying, He knows the right thing to say at the right time. He can convince you that your injury is an advantage to you no matter what the odds. TALK OF future Olympics, isnt just talk to Laura, shed really like to be there someday. There is nothing Id like more than representing the United States in the Olympic Games in 1988, it would be terrific, Id just love it. Of course its way too early to tell right now, but who knows what might happen. Zaugg, who just graduated from Clearfield High, never ran the 300 meter hurdles prior to the 1984 Davis High Invitational Car- ter Cook, Roger Thomas and WOMEN WHO compete in the Olympics are usually about 27 years old, which is 10 years older than me. If 88 wasnt the time, then maybe 92. But whether I make it or not, I wont feel like a faliure. There are so many things that could crop up, said Zaugg. ONE EVENT that will help Laura judge the future, will be the National Junior Olympics in Los which Laura Angeles June plans to attend. Thompson, who was Lauras outdoor coach this past spring commented, I figured Laura could run the 300 meters very early and later on because we really needed her there, she was dropped 16-2- 4, in it. I BELIEVE Laura has a shot at the Olympics, but a lot will show at the Junior Olympics this month. But in college Laura will do well in the hepthalon (and event Laura has won in Utah against her high school competitors for two straight years). "Were really going to miss her around here.
