Show at P present resent the all important question discussed is whether bountiful shall be incorporated or not the principal object jobje ct of the movers of the scheme is to secure our mountain streams and increase the same by tunneling in the mountains and bluming where the is great heretofore it has been impossible for the people to become united enough to build a flume or do anything thin A municipal government govern mint would give the men we elect for officers the power to order these things done and to collect money to pay for same when accomplished A municipal government 0 is simply a local government the officers are elected by the people the business that directly concerns our town that has been transacted at the county seat we could attend to ourselves the strongest argument perhaps used by those opposed to incorporation is that the taxes will be raised and that they are already too high it is certain that the taxes will be raised as it always requires money to carry on a government but if the benefits secured will make property more valuable and build up the town why should we not be willing to pay some extra taxes itis it is similar to building a new house that always costs money but you always have the value of your money only it is in another form if our creeks were flamed and the canyon streams increased by tunneling into the mountains it would cost money but this would not be lost they would be improvements that would add to the value of our real estate now as for our officers they too must receive something for the time they spend in counsel for usand us and us baly high wages are expected for a public office but it seems that heavy and unnecessary expenses could be obviated by tile the people electing 0 men who arc economical economic aland and who could afford to do something for the conr hodr jr thern them is in the offices A great many towns in utah have already been incorporated and without a doubt it would be an advantage to us it must be not all tile the money required to pay city expenses comes from a direct tax but much of it would come from licenses issued to saloons and business houses h ous in a twin town like ours the city council would not be required require I 1 to meet so often as in a large city thus cutting down the expenses go through the county and aak every merchant if he likes tile credit system if he thinks it pays it is our candid opinion that the retail in ei eich ch eh ants of the west and especially v our home merchants have not made a 11 d dollar 01 by the credit system 10 lo he be sure they have paid dividends anel and I 1 the institutions have appeared to do well but if they will go over their books at the end of any year and figure up the amount of out sanni ling accounts and the interest on tb em cm they will have an amount equal to the profit on all the book accounts that have been paid if we are credibly informed the bountiful coop co op has about sg ac C 00 outstanding standing ut and a great deal of this account is very old the opi op era ouse has hasi in its short life abi ab nit ut A out and some of this account is aboid as old as the store and bids fair to live as long for it is as healthy today as the day the goods passed over the counter it itis is plain to be seen that some body has lost mone money Y if the merchant has prospered paid a dividend paid his big bills the paying part of the community have paid the bill and these outstanding accounts should be collected and given to the people who have paid for their goods employ nine men out of every ten to work out au an account and you do not get over half the worth of your money and then some of your cu cus a will tell you that they would not work cheaper for any one and take it on the store and at the same time they have had the use of your money for a year and it is money they owe you and should pay ten percent interest on the same some men after having been accommodated with a large amount for a long time without interest will ask you to treat when they pity pay up it is a settled fact that a great many who ask for credit are poor because they tire arc to get a job except to pay a debt that the creditor thinks he can collect in no other way many more are poor because they spend their money for whiskey and luxuries and run in debt for the necessities of life others are poor miserable lazy cusses that never intend to pay they have accounts in this town 20 years old and still merchants are such fools that they will trust them hem to a winters provisions for ear competitors will get their trade D the spring when they get to work and markit mark it when they get a 20 they will go to the other store to spend a five for fear they will be asked to turn the other fifteen on account there is however a class of men that need and deserve credit and yet tile the merchants runs a risk in trusting them they will pay if they get it but it if i hardly square to ask the merchants to carry them and run the risk if we have men that are sick that have met with mis fortion let us all share the amount they need and not ask the merchant to take all of it there is still another class that can and will pay but still they are arc almost obliged to go into debt but even with these it is better licit er to hire the money and pay the interest and buy enough cheaper for cash to pay the interest our merchants have had customers owing them so long that it would pay to send them a receipt in full through the CLIPPER so every body would know that they did not owe the institution a cent and that the me customers themselves would know that their accordant coant acco ac rant was settled su so they would come back and trade without being afraid of being asked for their old account it is dadural ra tural for a man to go and sperio his money where he will not be re dunned donned for back account |
