Show orts Citizen - Wednesday, June 4, 1997 - Page 12 r Local kickers shine with All-Stars Led by players from American Fork, Pleasant Grove and Lehi High Schools, the North soccer all-stars all-stars beat the South squad in a shootout 5-3 on Monday, June 2. The game is sponsored annually by Utah Valley State College and features outstanding seniors from each high school soccer team in Utah County. Lehi's Mike Corbett was the North head coach this year. The South squad scored early, putting one past Lehi goalkeeper Ethan Adams about 12 minutes into the game. The North made many good offensive runs but were turned back repeatedly by excellent South defenders. Patience and continued pressure pres-sure on the net by the North resulted in a goal by Pleasant Grove's Jeff Dastrup on a pass from teammate Ricardo Marques with three minutes left in the half. The second half was nearly a carbon copy of the first. The South scored again about 15 minutes in on a deflection from a corner kick. The North defense then stiffened, led by the efforts of Lehi's Jake Baer and Pleasant Grove sweeper Glenn Giles, who was later named the game's most valuable defensive player. With the midfield duo from Pleasant Grove, American Fork's Nik Sharp, Paul Gillespie and Mickey Nelson and Lehi's Darin Adams continued to make runs at the South goal. With eight minutes left in the game, Nelson broke through the defense and put one under the goalkeeper's shoulder to tie the game. UVSC officials decided to break the tie with a shootout. Gillespie replaced Adams in goal and nearly got the first corner shot with his outstretched fingertips. Nelson followed fol-lowed with a fake misdirection, sending the ball to the right corner. Gillespie blocked the next shot but the North kicker missed. So did the next South kicker, but the Orem player made his. The fourth South kicker also missed, and Marques iced the win with another great corner shot. Apparently confused by the multiple outstanding performances perfor-mances on the North squad, UVSC officials awarded the offensive and overall MVP awards to members of the South team. y ts'-fv , - i ii ri r i hiiii n iiiiiiiiiTramirniii ni ' ' -.4 Left midfielder Nik Sharp, forwardgoalkeeper Paul Gillespie and forwardmidfielder Mickey Nelson represented repre-sented AFHS in the Utah County Senior All-Star Game June 2 at UVSC.
