Los pocos minutos que lleva el asegurarse de que las cosas estén bien amarradas pueden marcar la diferencia entre la vida y la muerte”, aseguró. Al inaugurar la campaña Njord estuvo acompañado por el Coronel Lance Davenport, de la Policía Estatal de Caminos (UHP), la Senadora Patricia Jones y el Cónsul de México para el área de Salt Lake Eusebio Romero, quien ayudó a UDOT a grabar los comerciales de radio en español. La Policía Estatal de Caminos recibe actualmente 6 mil llamadas por año en el condado de Salt Lake, en las que se informa sobre cosas perdidas o abandonadas en las carreteras y que deben ser removidas por seguridad. Reconociendo la gravedad del problema, la Legislatura Estatal recientemente convirtió en ley la Propuesta SB44, sugerida por la Senadora Jones, la cual incrementa las multas por tirar basura en zonas prohibidas. La ley de Utah ahora requiere que los conductores aseguren correctamente sus cosas e impone multas de hasta 500 dólares por objetos perdidos, y hasta 250 dólares por tirar basura intencionalmente. “Los funcionarios del Departamento de Transporte están convencidos de que la campaña ‘La Basura Duele’ reducirá significativamente la cantidad de desechos recolectados, y más importante, el número de accidentes que se presentan en las autopistas de Utah cada año”, dijo Njord. Lara Ahora Utah En mayo un grupo de 45 estudiantes del programa de Inmersión Bilingüe de la Escuela Primaria Jackson se graduó de su primer año del Campamento de Ciencias Adelante. Este grupo es un ejemplo de que las experiencias en este campamento a edad temprana pueden llegar a motivar a los estudiantes latinos y a sus familias a contemplar una educación universitaria como una prioridad. Adelante es un esfuerzo en conjunto de la Facultad de Educación de la Universidad de Utah, el programa de Inmersión Bilingue de las escuelas de educación primaria y la comunidad. Adelante, que cumplirá su cuarto año de existencia durante el año académico 2008-2009 con el campamento que inicia el 9 de junio, “busca preparar a los estudiantes latinos y sus familias para su futuro académico. Este grupo de académicos cree que la preparación universitaria debe tener énfasis en el desarrollo intelectual de los estudiantes en relación con la comunidad y la cultura. Es así que esta visión se encuentra estrechamente relacionada con los objetivos de los programas de inmersión bilingue, en los que la cultura juega un papel muy importante en el desarrollo del language. Entre las actividades que los estudiantes han realizado en campamentos anteriores, se encuentran las visitas al Museo de Historia Natu- ral y al Jardín Red Butte. De acuerdo con Alemán, estos se realizaron “con el objetivo de proporcionar a los estudiantes la oportunidad de explorar el mundo natural por medio de sus sentidos”. Este verano, las oportunidades de aprendizaje abundan: “Las actividades ... incluyen visitas a Space Aces, donde aprenderán sobre el universo, naves espaciales y astronautas con el objetivo de motivar su imaginación, mientras que otro grupo del campamento explorará la ‘tecnología verde’ y las fuentes de energía alternativas. Ellos visitarán Utah House, una casa ecológica en Kaysville, para que aprecien el poder de la naturaleza y el por qué es imporante ahorrar energía”, indicó Alemán. Ante la actual crisis financiera y los alarmantes reportes que muestran a Utah entre los estados con mayor índice de quiebra financiera en el país, la Iglesia Aventura de Draper y el Banco Zions crearon un programa para ofrecer asesoría en finanzas. La iniciativa se tomó con el fin de “intentar marcar la diferencia”, señaló Ira Popper, pastor de la iglesia, reconociendo que las finanzas son un aspecto muy importante de la vida. El programa se llama Universidad de Tranquilidad Financiera. Su creador es Dave Ramsey, experto en finanzas y autor de los libros Financial Peace y The Total Money Makeover. La Universidad de Tranquilidad Financiera es un programa que apoya el mejoramiento del aspecto económico de la vida. Capacita a la gente para que pueda desarrollar una estrategia de finanzas mediante un curso de 13 semanas que enseña cómo ahorrar dinero, reducir deudas y crear un flujo positivo de dinero. Según Don Miene y Steve Verno, funcionarios del Banco Zions, “estudios realizados muestran que los resultados pueden observarse a partir de los primeros 91 días después de haber terminado los cursos. La familia promedio incrementará sus ahorros en 2 mil 700 dólares, pagará alrededor de 5 mil 300 en deudas, y en un período de tres años habrá pagado sus deudas en su totalidad”.
