Mrs. hani - An-nl- Azad-ul-Mul- nt HIS AFFINITY By LAWRENCE ALFRED CLAY lUipyrlght, luig, by Amuouwl Literary Frees.) Mr. Solomon Jackson lived in the village of Scarsdale. He was a bachelor and forty years old. One day he was driving through the streets of the town of Glen Hope, 30 miles from home, when he saw a woman standing at her gate. Mr. Jackson yulled up his horse and gazed at her in astonishment. She returned the gaze with one of Indignation. He drove on after a moment, hitched his horse, and then returned. Lady, permit me to hope that you are a widow, he said. I am, sir," she replied, stiffly. Have you any business With me? 1 have. I will return In half an hour. Mr. Jackson went to the nearest He was store and made inquiries. told that the woman was the widow Lester, and had been for the last ten years. Nothing but words of praise could be spoken of her. In half an hour he knocked at the widows door, and when he had been asked to sit down he began: Widow, have you ever heard that every man and woman has an affinity? "I dont understand you. There is some one in this world for you, and some one for me. I knew you were for me as soon as I clapped eyes on you. You are my affinity. We were bound to meet It has taken years and years, but we are face to face at last. Widow The widow Lester rose up and ordered Mr. Jackson from the house and told him to take the rapid transit line in leaving. Without a word of protest he went. Three days later she answered a knock on the door to find the bowing and smiling Mr. Jackson. In her surprise she Invited him in, and he said: Widow, I am a lone man you are a lone woman. You have about three thousand dollars worth of property I have the same. My hair would be gray if I didnt use dye yours would be the same. I have a squint to my left eye you have one. You have a slight limp from falling down the cellar stairs, probably mine was caused the same way. Dont you see the points of resemblance? Mr. Jackson went out of doors again, and was warred that his next call would result in his arrest. The widow was mad all through. The only consolations she had was that he hadnt mentioned her glass eye. She had worn one for years, and only a few She neighbors were in the secret. looked upon the man as half crazy, but meant It when she threatened him. In two davs Mr. Jackson returned. He got no farther than the doorstep this time, but he stood there with hat off and said: Widow, I can no more help it than you could have helped having whooping-cough when you whs a child. The more I think about you the surer I am that you are my affinity, and the harder I love you. It isnt me, but faie. You have a glass eye so have I. You The widow walked across the street to the house of the constable and had Mr. Jackson arrested. He was taken before a justice of the peace and fined $10. He cheerfully handed over the money, and said to his honor and the others: Gentlemen, make no mistake. Im am simply a victim of fate. Mrs. Lester is my affinity. I shall marry her. No law ever mad can beat fate. You let the widow alone or you may find yourself in jail," warned the justice, and it was generally believed that would end it. It did for a week. Then came Mr. Jacksons knock on the door. It wasnt opened to him, but from a second floor window he was commanded to leave. Back again, my dear widow, as you see, he replied as he raised his hat T wanted to keep away, but fate was too strong for me. You are the magnet that draws. I want to prove to vou that I am an honorable man, and then I want to tell you that I am fully determined to marry you. The widow appealed to a passerby and Mr. Jackson was facing the squire again an hour later. The whole town neither ciazy nor a nuisance. Many a man has gone to Jail for the woman he loved, and I shall make no kick. I respect the Widow Lester In the highest., I also love her In the most honorable way. It is fate. She Is my affinity. The next time It may be thirty! was the warning as the prisoner waa removed to jail. Within an hour he had provided himself with writing material and was writing the history of his life. When finished he sent It to the Widow Lester. He composed verses and sent them to her. He wrote that he was a martyr for her dear take. He recommended certain books for her reading during her leisure hours. She had a g.rden back (J her house. He recommended something more efficacious than parts green for potato bugs. Not two hours a day passed that a messenger from the jail was not knocking at her door. The widows first thought was to send everything back unopened, but womans curiosity triumphed. She read and looked grim. Then she read and felt a secret sympathy. Then she was real sorry that she had been the means of sending the man to jail. He hadnt said a thing out of the way. He had simply been rather plain-spoke- Mr. Jackson hadnt served out half his sentence when his case had made an impression, alth'yrgh he was not to know it. In addition to his sonnets and idyls and poems, he began sending a sort of diary, as follows: 7 oclock a. m. Awoke to think of my charming widow. Heaven bless her! 9 a. m. Am suffering for the dear widow, but am proud of the fact Wish I could suffer harder. 11 a. m. If only the dear woman would send me a little note in answer, but I cannot expect it. It grieves me to the quick to think I have grieved her. Noon. Only boiled cabbage and musty pork for dinner, but I am not complaining. I trust that my affinity is sitting down to a queenly feast. When Mr. Jacksons sentence had expired the Janitor warned him that he had better make for his home town on the canter. Mr. Jackson didnt do any such thing. He made for the Widow Lesters. The widow had on her Sunday dress and was looking as neat as a pin. When the knock came at the door she was listening for it. It was noondoy, and she had the table set and a boiled dinner ready. Mr. Jackson was invited in. He was invited to take the head of the table. The conversation was general until the meal was finished. Then he produced and read a poem of 30 verses. It affected the widow, and there were tears standing In her eyes as she asked: And now what do you mean by affinity. I dont know what the word signifies. Easy as easy, my dear. Certain people are soulmates. We are, for instance. Fate discovered when we were born that we should meet and love and marry. But I married Mr. Lester, and you never married at all. That was only that .we might love the more when we did meet. La me, but its all so curious! But your heart tells you something, doesnt it? I I guess bo, since you went to jail. They all say you are a good man. None better, affinity. Let your heart keep right on believing it. At that moment the constable knocked at the door and asked of Mrs. Lester: Want him arrested and Jailed again, maam? Oh, Lord, no! she replied. Why, I expect Ive got to marry him as soon as I can get my clothes ready!" Gypsy Wordless Language. Starting of new drilling work In the oil fields of Grand and Wayne counties is reported. Work has been resumed in the Auburn placer properties, near Chafey, Nev., which were purchased recently A by a Wardner, Ida., syndicate. shaft 120 feet deep Is equipped with a hoist. Net earnings of the Belmont mine at Tonopah for August were $211,250, the high record for any Tonopah mine. The Belmont has been coming up rapidly since the uncovering of its new ore body. The Barker property of Montana is reported to have four feet now in the west drift on the level, all of which is heavy lead ore. This ore body has Increased recently from a streak. Existence of highly encouraging ore conditions in the property of the 300-fo- ten-inc- h Eudora Bell Mining company, formerly known as the Silver Bell mine, in American Fork canyon, Utah, Is re-pcent quarterly dividend. So ready has been the response to the call for specimens and exhibits for the mines display at the Utah er state fair that Director Harry Jo- seph reports that he has on hand almost more than could be cared for. That W. H. Clark and associates of Salt Lake City have in their Silent King and adjoining groups of claims in Arizona the making of a bonanza gold mine, becomes more apparent with every additional foot of work accomplished. Rich tailings, which were left front t; eating its picture rock in mills, are being shipped by the National Mining company of Nevada to the Selby smelter for treatment. The tailings, it is said, will run from $4,000 to $5,000 a ton In gold. The August production of the Utah Copper company will be very close to 7,443,000 pounds. This figure represents a reduction of 1,200,000 pounds from the average monthly output of the three preceding munths, or a curtailment of 14 per cent. The operation of producing oil from a Utah mine was witnessed a few days ago by a party of Salt Lake mining men who went to inspect the workings of the Paraffine Oil company of Utah near Mill Fork. The Investigators were enthusiastic over what they had seen. The Nipissing has declared Its 5 company for the month of August shows that the reserves were added to In that period by 2,178,000 tons of ore, the value of which Is 2.74 per cent copper. This brings the total for the mine up to 25,223,498 tons, per cent copper ore. Blame for the present surplus copper is placed on the shoulders of the new porphyry propositions of which the Utah Copper Co. of Utah and the Nevada Consolidated of Nevada are the pioneers. Perhaps no better tribute could be given these newfangled propositions than this blame. Utah members of the American Mining congress, realizing the importance of measures which are likely to be acted upon by the sessions to be opened In Los Angeles on September 26, have inaugurated a campaign whose object is to assure as great an attendance from this state as may be possible. One of the largest ore bodies ever, found In the Kindergarten mine of the Seven Troughs Coalition company has been opened in one of the lower levels, according to the Seven Troughs Miner. The face of the east drift on the fourth level is in ore from wall to wall, and has had that showing the last two weeks. Negotiations which have been in prsgress, at intervals, for a number of of years, the accomplishment which is almost certain to give to the Park City district a new great mine, came to a successful conclusion on September 25, when papers were signed which give the owners of the West Quincy and Thompson properties the privilege of draining and operating those properties through the workings of the Daly West, the Daly and the Ontario mining companies, Including Ontario tunnel No. of-2.- 65 2. Revival of mining upon an economical basis, in the camps of Fairview, Wonder and Rawhide. Nevada, is promised as a result of the completing to those camps of the new electrics power line from Mono lake. That the porphyry ore the continuation of the Nevada Consolidated company's Copper Flat ore body has been encountered in the Eureka shaft of the Ely Central company, is no longer questioned, according to late advices from the camp. Stewart Springs, nine miles west of the new gold camp of Athens, Nevada, is attracting oil lands locators in large numbers. Nearly evaiy prospector and miner in Athens and Juniper camps has made locations in the new oil field, It is said. During the year 1909, there was a total of 119 deaths from dust explosions in the coal mines of West Virginia. This year none. It is estimated that the last 100,000 000 tons or coal mined In the state has been produced without the loss of a single life by explosion. Picked samples of ore taken from a new strike in Granite mountain, 140 miles north of Reno, Nevada, have returned assay values as high as $32,700 a ton, mostly in gold. The vein, which is 18 fnehes wide at the surface, has taen tienched more than 400 feet. |
