Show Re Salt Lake Trib Sunday/May 11, 1997 ‘Estate Section F Advertising supplement produced by the Newspaper Agency Corporation | New homeowners: Do you know whatto do when disposal turns silent? Ny 'N MY LAST COLUMN,I SUGGESTED that readers use washing soda to clear grease from a drain. The problem is, most people don’t know what washing sodais or how to getit. West Liberty residents have it madein the shade Washingsoda is crystallized Sodium Bicarbonate, but it may not be available in Salt Lake City. Bicarbonate of Soda (baking soda), which is a powder, could be used instead. Sorry about the confusion, butit was nice to hear from you.Atleast I know you’re there. Let me try my handat a couple of other subjects. isposals: If you have a garbage disposal,it is probably either a contin- uousfeed or batch feed with locking cover. The instruction booklet will give precise directions for disposal operation. Always use cold water whenthe disposal is on andespecially whengrinding greasy substances. Manypeople erroneously conclude that because their waste disposalis capable of grinding up most oftheir garbage,it is also capable of eliminating grease and other substances they would not otherwise pour down a drain. In fact, you should be equally careful not to clog disposal drains with grease. Should the drain become clogged, do not put chemicals down the disposal. Avoid putting large amounts of fibrous materials (such as banana peels or corn husks) down your disposal. Also avoid grinding bones, or other hard materials. Mostdisposals have a reset button that works in much the same wayas a circuit breaker. Should the disposal become overloaded with a substance it cannotgrind,it will turn itself off. If this happens, turn the switch off, removethe substance obstructing the disposal’s operation, wait about three minutes, and pushthe reset button. Tur the switch on. If it still does notstart, turn it off again and check to see if you havetripped the circuit breaker. If the circuit breaker has not interrupted the flow ofthe current, turn off the circuit breaker and use a mop or brcom handle to turn the rotating plate in the disposal unit until it turns freely. Restore the current, push the reset button again, and turn the disposal switch to on. Some disposals come equipped with a special wrench that can be inserted in a hole in the bottom of the disposal. Others have a twopronged wrenchthatfits into the top ofthe rotating plate. Turning the wrench a couple of times will usually loosen the material enoughsothat the disposalwill start. Warning: Be absolutely sure the circuit breakeris off before inserting tongs to remove material whenthe disposalis stalled. Also be sureit is off before using the wrenchor a broomstick. Fireplaces: Before using yourfireplace, equip it with andironsor a grate and a well-fitting screen. Check to see if it draws properly. To dothis, open the damper, light a newspaper on the andironsorgrate andsee if the smokeis carried up the chimney. Before lighting anyfire, the damper should be opened. Keep the damper closed whenthefireplace is not in use so that warmair will not escape in the winter and coolair will not escape in the summer. Build all fires on the andirons, not directly on thefireplace floor. Do not burn trash rubbishin the fireplace. Neveruse kerosene, gasoline or other highly flammable liquidsto start a fire, and always be sure thefire is out each night before youretire. Store firewood outside, away from the house, because it may harbor insects and because wood stored outside will burn longer. Occasionally throwing a handful of salt on thefire will help prevent the accumulation ofsoot, andit will also add colorto the flames. However, salt should neverbe used in fireplaces made of metal. The chimney should be checked periodically to see if cleaning is necessary. A chimney professional can determine if your chimney needsservice. Circuit Breakers: Circuit breakers _ The shadowsthatplay on the front yards and dance across the narrow streets are a familiar sight in West Liberty. They’ve been making their rounds for sometime now, reminding us today of the way things were back when. Manyofthe homes in West Liberty date backtothe early 1900s, an era whenlife in Salt Lake City afforded little time to appreciate the subtle grandeur of shadowsand sunsets and quietstillness. There was so muchto accomplish. It was a time whenthe city and the neighborhood were rising from the groundup, from sun up to sun down. Thebuilding ofa city doesn’t happen by chance or withouteffort, and this barren valley that greeted the Mormon pioneers was hardly withoutits challenges. But with each new home that was constructed, with each young sapling that was planted, so too came a new shadow to enduretheride. In time, these shadows would becomethe neigh- borhood’s mostdefining attribute, it’s most recognizable characteristic. The byproducts of these homesandtrees would ultimately becomethe neighborhood’s most obvioustexture Today, the shadows, they come. They appear on well-kept lawns and against garage doors, their length and duration changing with the monthsofthe year. They are a welcomeoasis everyJuly and August, providingrelief whenitis most needed. Whatwe don’t take for granted. Someof the shadowsarecast from arts-and-crafts-style homes. Others from humble bungalows. It matters not, for the variety of shapes andsizes is what makesit all magically melt together. Manylong, shady stretches, which run from one endofthe blocktothe other, are compliments of the many trees that flank thestreets. Such leafy canopies are a noveltyin this era of urban sprawl andtrendy subdivisions. “We knew we wanted to buy an old bungalow,”said Jennifer Muse, who along with her husband, Derek, and Manyof the homesin WestLiberty are shrouded by leafy canopies. their two children moved into West Liberty 18 months ago.“The price was right and we were able to get in. The location, the fact that we are so close to downtown, wasanother thing we were looking for. There are a couple of other at-home momsin the neighborhood. We all load upthestrollers and off we go.” Amongother changesto the neighborhood, Musehas noticed more young couples moving in and more community involvement. “Tt is kind of an evolving neighbor- } hood,” Musesaid. * New people are ~ comingin andtrying to change things for the better. It is a diverse group, whichis nice. Our community council is getting more organized and coming together.” Muse estimates that some1,000 homesare located in West Liberty, whichstretches from 500 East to State Street and from 900 South to 1300 South. “Welike to spendtime onthe front porch andin the front yard, where we talk with our neighbors and visit,” Muse said. “More and more people in the neighborhood,it seems, are like that too.” protect the electrical wiring and equipmentin your homefrom overloading. They are the safety valves of your home’s electrical system. Every home should have a mastercircuit breaker. It generallyis located near the smaller circuit breakers. When the mastercircuit breakeris tripped, the electricity to the house is cut off. Circuit breakers maybe resetbyfirst switching the breakerto full off and then backto full on. The appearance ofa tripped breakeris suchthatit is notin line with the other breakers that are in the on position.
