Show WHEN THEN the present system of physical cal culture for young women was put into practice here more than a year ago there were many students and outsiders outsiders outsiders out out- siders who were disposed to regard the whole thing as one of those fads which are constan constantly ly forced upon society by persons who hope to thus gain a passing t f notoriety Of course the more intelligent intelligent in in- r those who were more in touch with the most advanced thought recognized the importance of a good system of physical training for women and saw that the system introduced d by Miss Babcock embodied many of the best fruits of the most careful study of physical education by the most eminent specialists of our time It would seem that none but the most obtuse could ignore the necessity of physical ion for women as well as for men Physical excellence must accompany mental and moral advancement The advancement of the race depends most upon the excellence of the mothers of the race Therefore anything that looks to the fuller education of woman is of the greatest advantage to progress The good points of this system of physical training are manifold It gives grace and freedom of motion the muscles beautifies the person and makes possible the fuller development of the mind as well as of the body And not the least of its advantages is that it tends to supplant that false modesty which prevails to such an extent in our society with true modesty and true respect respect respect re re- for womanhood |
