Show field stream by vemon vernon W shields the winter range problem for our deer and elk is now at its critical stage two months ago we were wondering where all the deer were now they are in our backyards down in the farmer farmers s grain ards getting killed by cars on the highways and making a general nuisance of themselves everywhere the officials of the union pacific railroad report that at least fifty deer have been killed by their trains between erda and the point of the mountain that s a lot of deer and its it s a dam darn shame but what are we going to do about ita its it s not the deer deers s fault what are they going to do when heavy snow storms force them out of the hills the farms cities peo pie cars trams trains and so forth occupy their winter range its it s the same old story civilization and wildlife don t get along very well together it s next to impossible to have very much of both some farmers in the erda district are getting very much up in arms over the s tuition they maintain that the deer are causing them considerable damage they have called a meet TIE ng for the early part of this week to see what can be done officials ot the state fish and game de apartment part ment will be on hand to dis cuss ways and means of prevent ing further damage I 1 have talked with both mr roy garrard county game warden and mr merrill hand chief ward en for the fish and game depart ment they told me that they are doing everything in their power to relieve the situation they also advised me that they are hiring riders to ride this special district and try to drive the deer back off the farmland they dont think much of the idea of trying to feed he the deer because of the ous cost what would be the mat ter of raising our out of state lie lic i ense fees and using this money to help feed our deer during these critical winter montha these big shots that fly in here and kill our deer and elk what do they care about our range problems it looks to me like they are having a big time at our expense I 1 am of the opinion that feeding our deer Is the only solution to the whole pro blem but the cost would be tre however the fish and game department should know what is the best procedure to fol low in cases of this kind liand its not that we have too many deer in this area it s because we have had more snow than usual it is the first time in the history of the county that we have had to meet a situation of this kind I 1 think the f and property owners should be a little more tolerant what I 1 zion aint t understand is why some farmers are raising cane over certain damages while others right next to them maintain that the damage is not too severe and are aking taking a little time out to drive them back from their property I 1 hope that at this meeting of he the farmers the sportsmen and the fish and game department will be able to solve the problem to the complete satisfaction of all con berned you know I 1 finally decided what I 1 am going to do when I 1 retire I 1 am going into the dog raising bus mess iness hunting dogs that is it its S just lately that I 1 have discovered that I 1 have an uncanny ability a long this line imagine this mm min lature brain of mine figuring out a way to make money after all these years it its s also very simple for example two years ago I 1 paid forty bucks for a choice english setter pup two weeks after I 1 got him he came down with a beautiful case of distemper this required hos vitalization and the services of an expert veterinary and so shields was forced to shell out another twenty bucks then all alls s well 1 I have a good healthy pup he won t ever have distemper again and it looks like he is going to make a good hunting companion then along came this ordeal of house breaking this is the part that the good little wife enjoyed so much the continually stooping over to remove certain spots from the rug and linoleum finally after the bride had threatened to leave me several times the mutt caught on and was graduated from the house breaking classes next came the kennel you youve ve got to have a ken nel you cant can t have a sixty dol lar pooch running aro around und the neighborhood all the time and so fifteen or twenty more iron men are required to build said kennel I 1 had eighty bucks tied up in him which made a pretty valuable setter so I 1 had to be sure he got some good training hour af after ter hour I 1 spent trying to te teach ach him to retrieve to heel hee to study and to obey my every command up until this point everything had been go mg ing fine and then he decided to jump the fence and kill a few of the neighbors chickens there went another ten bucks I 1 took him out pheasant hunting for the first time he ile looked good hunted wide and fast in fact too wide he ile set on birds about a dundr hundred ed yards from me some good sportsmen came along flushed the bird before I 1 could get to it I 1 was disgusted but I 1 kept trying finally he de aided he d rather chase black birds than pheasants I 1 yelled my lungs out but to no avail he returned when he felt like it that was the last straw I 1 decided I 1 wanted a dog to retrieve ducks as well as pheasants I 1 advertised him for sale and managed to dispose of him for twenty dollars after two years my net profit was minus seventy dollars not taking into account his board bill that s how I 1 make money out of all my business ven tures well I 1 had the use of the dog t I 1 what did I 1 do with that twenty bucks I 1 got gota I 1 bought another dog naturally today I 1 returned home from salt lake with a dandy little brittany spaniel the hunting dog supreme the shields boy sets sail on another business venture the cost to date forty dollars |
