Madsen Jay Dee Harris Lifetime Achievement Awards set for May 27 SUSC slates dinner , gala to honor five Utahns who have contributed to quality of the day in the Beehive State SUSC will inaugurate the new Utah Lifetime Achievement Awards program on May 27 with a banquet and tribute gala honoring five Utah citizens: Maurice Abravanel, Jay Dee Harris, Dallin H.Oaks, Arch L. Madsen, and J. Keith Rigby. The award recipients, selected by the faculty and administrators of the various schools of the College, are described as individuals whose lifetime accomplishments attest to their tireless energies and dedication, character and competence. The recipients will spend the day of the ceremonies in classrooms and seminars, sharing with students and faculty the special insights gained through a lifetime of distinguished endeavors, stated SUSC President Gerald R. Sherratt. The evening ceremonies, consisting of an awards banquet followed by a tribute gala, will usher in SUSCs commencement week. Actress Hope Lange, who starred in the television series The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, will serve as the mistress of ceremonies for the tribute gala, which will also feature SUSCs new dance ensemble, with choreography by Burch Mann, distinguished artist in residence at the college; the SUSC Symphon Orchestra; Opus I, the Colleges swingjazz choir; the Country Fiddlers, the popular Cedar High School performing group; and Crossfire, a country western group. The program will be videotaped for later telecast over station KUED in Salt Lake City. The five honorees form an august group: Abravanel served for 32 years as the director of the Utah Symphony Orchestra. In 1981 he was awarded the American Symphony Orchestra Leagues Gold Baton Award and in 1950 won the Antoinette Perry (Tony) Award. He has twice been nominated for Grammy Awards. Harris is the owner of the Harris Truck and Equip- - Emmy award winning actress Hope Lange will serve as ( mistress of ' J ceremonies atK the starstudded event on campus. i V..v ment Company in Tremonton and is a prominent educational leader, having served as chairman of the Box Elder School District, and as a member of the Utah State University Institutional Council and the Utah State Board of Regents, the governing body for all state public colleges and universities. Madsen has served as president of Bonneville International Corporation since 1961 and is one of Americas foremost broadcast executives. He is an active member of many worldwide organizations to promote freedom of the press, including the World Press Freedom Committee, on which he serves as e chairman. Oaks, a Utah state supreme court justice, is a former president of Brigham Young University, Americas largest private university. He is also chairman of the board of the Public Broadcasting Service and is a former executive director of the American Bar Foundation. Rigby is a renowned geologist who is among the worlds foremost experts in the study of fossil sponges. A professor of geology at Brigham Young University, he is equally at ease with paleontology and aerial mapping and has headed geological expeditions all over the globe. The dinner begins at 6 p.m. in the Great Hall of the student center; the gala is set for 8 p.m. in the College Auditorium.
