Show THE SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENCE. Where there is smoke there is the same. As it is, there are some very sore heads, and the Free Press does not feel called upon to apply the healing lotion. ' usually some hre. During' the last week there was a rumpus of considerable proportions propor-tions stirred up among the Republicans Repub-licans of this county over the nomination nomi-nation of the superintendent of schools. The immediate cause of this unpleasantness was occasioned by some editorial remarks in the Mt. Pleasant Pyramid. What truth there was in it all, the Free Press is unable to say; but that there was something in it, is evidenced evi-denced by the fact that it called for four columns of explanation in the party paper last Saturday. It is not likely that one side was altogether alto-gether wrong in its accusations, or the other side wholly in the right. The non-partisan school convention conven-tion is a matter of history, but it won't be amiss to consider it again fora moment. "Non-partisan" was the name given the convention by the official call of the two chairmen, but it proved to be a convention composed of two Republican factions, fac-tions, with considerable of a sectional sec-tional spirit mixed in. The fight was waged to the end by these two factions, a solid Republican delegation dele-gation supporting Mr. Larsen on one side, against the northern Republicans Re-publicans and a few Democratic delegates favoring Mr. Christensen. The convention, outside of Mr. Christensen's supporters, was dominated domi-nated absolutely by the Republicans, Republi-cans, and they carried the day for Mr. Larsen, by a majority of one vote. The result was not satisfactory satisfac-tory to the defeated Republican faction, hence this trouble. - To aggravate matters, a few days ago a movement was started, osten'-sibly osten'-sibly by the teachers of the county, in favor of Mr. George Christen-sen. Christen-sen. The movement had not the sanction of Mr. Christensen, and both the correspondents of the city papers, from Manti and Mt. Pleasant, Pleas-ant, stated that Mr. Christensen did not give his sanction to the movement. Further, he informed some of the trustees of the county by telegram that he did not give his approval and consent to the use of his name. However, his supporters sup-porters were determined, and many votes were cast for him on Monday, particularly in the north end of the county, where he received a good majority of all the votes cast. Indeed, In-deed, only the strong vote of Ephraim Eph-raim saved the election of Mr. Larsen Lar-sen . The whole matter is to be regretted, regret-ted, but it was purely a factional and sectional fight, and the two Republican factions must settle it between themselves. As for ourselves, our-selves, we accepted the will of the convention, and recognized but one candidate, the choice of the convention. con-vention. And it would have been decidedly best for all to have done |
