Show T UTAHS LUNATICS tack of Fund S to Open time New Territorial Asylum From Dr W R Pike the medical superintendent su-perintendent of the Territorial Insane Asylum at Provo who was in the city today to-day a DEMOCRAT reporter learned that I the appointments of the asylum were all on hand and that the institution could be made ready for occupancy in a very short time The funds appropriated by the last Legislature have run out however and until some method is devised by which 10000 to 15000 can be raised to purchase supplies and defray the running expenses for a period of from three to six months the asylum may not be opened One proposition is that the different counties of the Territory advance a pro rata amount to its maintenance until the Legislature meets and grants the needed relief and another is that the Board of Directors stand responsible for all debts contracted and have it appropriated back to them by the Legislature The first proposition is the more feasible feasi-ble and should be the one adopted It would be a simple matter for the County Court of each county to make the necessary neces-sary arrangements with the Directors of the asylum in this matter and as the cost of boarding and attending insane patients at a large institution like this would not be much more than onehalf the cost where it is done individually while the hest treatment influences and methods of cure would be supplied it would seem to lie not only a matter of economy all around but really a matter of humanity Thirty insane patients could be btip plied from Salt Lake county alone and when the other counties are heard from there would be a sufficient number to crowd the asylum Utah is believed to have more insane people in proportion ito i-to its population than any other State or Territory due perhaps to climatic in fineuce and characteristics some accommodations are urgently needed and I should be provided for the worst cases |
