Show V t I JUDGE 0 W rOWERS Interviewed by a Eeportcr Some Information in Regard to the mormon Judgeship Judge Powers returned from Lansing Friday afternoon and was immediately overwhelmed with congratulations by his friends whose name are legion He was i cornered on the street last night by a i Gazetteer who had been dogging his footsteps foot-steps all day in a futile attempt to get an interview with the new Mormon judge His Honor submitted with as good grace as he could assume when he found there was 110 escape and the screws were applied ap-plied with the following result Now Judge the great question which is gnawing at the vitals of this public is I that of your appointment to the Supreme bench of Utah when you assume your new duties and in fact all about it I Mr Powers shifted his goldheaded cane to his left hand and assumed a look of becoming judicial solemnity and replied re-plied As to my appointment I received notice of it by telegram at Lansing Tuesday i Tues-day night from Mr Don M Dickinson of Detroit and I cannot express to you my surprise While I of course knew that my name had been recommended for the position I really had no idea that the honor would fall to me I received my commission today signed by President Presi-dent Cleveland and Secretary of State Bavard iI succeed Judge P H Emerson who resigned The Supreme Court of Utah consists of a Supreme judge and two associates Each associate judge is relegated to a judicial district over which he presides and in which the law requires him to reside re-side He presides over a district court which is very similar to our circuit coutt There are four terms of the District Courts held each year The Supreme Court holds two sessions each year in January and June at Salt Lake City to which cases from the District Courts maybe may-be appealed When will you assume the ermine Mr Powers I can hardly say I received a telegram tele-gram from Judge Emerson whom 1 succeed suc-ceed tonight congratulating me on my appointment and asking if I can be in Utah on the first Monday in May I have wired AttorneyGeneral Garland to know how soon I am expected to take possession posses-sion of my office and requesting that I may be allowed until the middle of May to close my business here but I do not know if my request will be granted and L it may be necessary for me to leave next week as it is a five days journey to Salt Lake City Shall you have the appointment of any clerk One only and I have already received I a telegram from Ogden Utah recommending recom-mending me to appoint Capt Cross of f that city to the position Capt Cross is an old soldier a thoroughly competent I man and a tried and true Democrat I withal but of course I cannot yet determine deter-mine whom I shall choose I presume sir that your gratification at tins evidence of appreciation by our President will not be altogether unmixed with regret at the thought of leaving Kalamazoo 1 And you are right It is twelve years tomorrow since I was admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court and twelve i I years the 30th of this month since I came to Kalamazoo and began work with Messrs May Buck for my board During these years I have fornied many attachments and made I believe many warm friends and although I fully appreciate ap-preciate this unexpected honor I shall leave Kalamazoo with greater regret than I can well express Where will you probably reside I That is a matter concerning which I am not as well posted as I wish I am in formed that I am assigned to the First District and that my place of residence will be at Ogden Whether this is correct cor-rect or not I am unable to say Ogden is situated north of Salt Lake City a short distance and is a thriving town of 5000 inhabitants Here another delegation of Mr Powers friends wearing white hats came along and captured the jedge and the interview inter-view adjourned sine die Kalamazoo Gazette Ga-zette May 1st |
