Show The AmorJcRn National UlanU Kansas City, Jan. 10. The National Na-tional Bank examiner for Missouri took charge of the American National I Bank for this city this morning.. 'A'h& capital stock of the bank was $12o.00C. During the early part of last week it became known to the members of the Kansas City Clearing llp.uap Ao-ciation Ao-ciation that tha bank was in nepd pf assistance. A meet ing of the association associa-tion was called and a resolution adopted, assuring the, American that upon a proper showing assistance would be rendered to the amount of ! 81,000,000. A committee was appointed i to examine the collaterals and Satur-! Satur-! day they reported that the paper. offered was not such as the banks of ! the association would accept. This decision made the failure of the bank ' inevitable, and the bank examiner assumed as-sumed charge of the concern. As a result of the failure a great deal of uneasiness was created among the depositors of the Kansas City Safe and Savings Deposit Bank,1, which was supposed by many to be connected with the American National Bank. There was a run on the first named bank, which paid all depositors promptly, and the officials claim that they can meet all obligations. The deposits of the bank are about Sl,200,000having fallen to that amount from $4,000,000 since the' lt or last October. It is ascertained that the bank owes over $800,000 of borrowed money. A gentleman in condition to know the condition of the other National Banks in this city said this morning that they were in an unusually good condition, and would not be materially affected by the failure. Washington, Jan. 19. Lacey.comp-troller Lacey.comp-troller of the currency, received a teleg'ara this morning from Bank Examiner Ex-aminer Marshal, announcing the suspension sus-pension of the American National Bank of Kansas City. He said there had been a very heavy run on the banks, and that the situation looked serious. lie added, however, that he did not think the bank's liabilities x-ceeded x-ceeded $100,000. The comptroller said he thought the bank was" suffering from its efforts to assist its correspondents correspond-ents in Kansas, four of which failed recently. There seems to be a decided difference differ-ence of views as to the failure of the Clearing House to extend assistance to the embarrassed bank. A prominent promi-nent member of the association tonight to-night said that when the committee met the chairmain certified checks for $1,000,000 to be turned over to Stimson, should the showing warrant the loan. The examination, he said,, proved that tho securities were entirely insufficient and the assistance was therefore withheld. : |
