Show HELD UP AND SHOT AT BY ROBBER v Instead of obeying the order of a masked highwayman to throw up his hands, Alvln Mortenson, residing at 2S47 Grant avenue, made his" escape last night by running, when ho was accosted near his home. Ten minutes min-utes after tho attempted holdup, ho was aiding the police in their search for tho lone bandit. Mortenson was on his way home from lodgo and was walking along Grant avenue between Twenty-seventh street when he noticed tho figure fig-ure of a man standing in the shadows. shad-ows. When ho was directly opposite 'the man on the sidewalk the stranger turned his face toward him and he saw that it was masked. A large revolver re-volver was leveled In his face and the startling order to "throw up his hands" was given. For a second Mortensen hesitated and then braving the glistening gun he turned and fled. The highwayman yelled that he would shoot to kill if he did not stop and Mortensen gaining distance at every bound, shouted back, "Let her go." The robber fired ono shot, the bullet whistling past the fleeing man and striking the sidewalk side-walk a few yards ahead. Mortensen did not stop. The robber did not pursue. The officers who accompanied Mortensen Mor-tensen to the scene of the holdup failed to find any trace of the highwayman. highway-man. nn |
