Show 'MONEY FOR' THE FOREST SERVICE Tho officers In charge of "District Four," or tho United States forest service, with hendquartors located at Ogden, aro delighted over the splendid splen-did news received from tho Washington Washing-ton office In the mattor of allotment of funds for this district during tho fiscal year beginning July 1, 1911. The total allotment for the district Is $007,-210, $007,-210, which Is an Increase of $70,720 over the allotment of any previous J Of the total of $907,210, $1GS,320 has boon set aside for the supply depot and the office of the property auditor. The supply depot at Ogden furnishes standard supplies, stationery and equipment for the entire service. Therefore, tho funds set aside for its maintenance are equally applicable for tho support and assistance of the remaining re-maining five districts of the forest service. This leaves a total of ?73S,890 for the administration of "District Four", and the district office proper A fund of $73,690 has been set aside for tho district office, leaving a total of $CC5,-300 $CC5,-300 for the administration and protection pro-tection of the thirty-three national for-osts for-osts In district No. 4 A fund of $75,000 has boen set nslde for the exclusive purpose of constructing construct-ing permanent Improvements within the national forests. The fund for this purpose last year was only $46,-000 $46,-000 Tho Increased fund made available avail-able this year will be used almost exclusively In the construction of trails, telephone lines, lookout stations, sta-tions, and other urgently needed fire protection improvements. It Is expected ex-pected that fully flvo hundred miles of telephone lines will be constructed on the forests In district No. 4 during the coming fiscal year. Planting Is to receive Increased attention at-tention under the allotment schedule granted to this district. A fund of $31,000 has been set aside for the exclusive ex-clusive purpose of maintaining the forest for-est nurseries in the district, plnntlng troes and collecting seed. It Is plnn-ned plnn-ned to collect not less than five tons of coniferous seed In district No 4 this season, provided the seed crop Is at all abundant A contingent fund of $10,000 Is held In the district office for the exclu6ivo purpose of meeting extraordinary emergencies em-ergencies In fighting fire on any of the forests in the district. In addition addi-tion to this, District Forester E, A. Sherman has held a forest contingent fund of $13,297, which will bo available avail-able for fire p:hrol necessities upon the different forests, which can not be anticipated at the present time. The appropriation for tho Agricultural Agricul-tural department during the coming fiscal year carries a special emergency fund of $1,000,000, which is to be available avail-able for fire protection In cases of extraordinary ex-traordinary emergency. No part of this fund has been allotted to the district, dis-trict, but should the fire season be an unusually unfavorable one, such as last year, the million dollar fund may bo drawn upon as conditions demand and circumstances may warrant. With the liberal provisions thus made for the protection of tho forests in this district, the officers in charge feel confident that tho disasters of last year will not be repeated. |
