En After a few years Preddy had two children Daniel and Debbie, who started schoolforthe 1st time. With the desire of help hers and many other children, she began toworkasa volunteeratthe school and she was called to be the President of Parents Teachers Association. Her husband saw the dedication and love that she had for education and he suggested that she enrolled in the University to study teaching. Despite the difficulty and sacrifice that having afamily with small childrenand go to the University represented for her, Preddy decided that she wanted to be a teacher and she enrolled at the University of Utah. ' Every day she took her children to school and went to study at the university, then picked up the kids at 11 a.m. The next year that her children were in school all day long, she began to study full time. After doing all the house work and putting the kids to bed, she would began studying til 11 or 12 at night and then wake up at 4 a.m. to continue studying. Predy remembers that she always slept with a book at her side. After four years of this she graduated from the University of Utah with honors. She majored in Primary education which allowed her to teach kindergarten through 8th grade. At this time it was very rare for a Hispanic person to at- A ARICA A 5 1 Nos 4, y el programa deeducación bilingue en 9 distritos en Utah y se necesitaban personas hispanas bilingues para administrar esos programas. "Actualmente con el comunicarse cated in English and needed to practice her Spanish more. Since that time , Preddy has worked inthe SaltLake School District's bilingual education program and she considers that the greatest satisfaction of her career and her personal life is to be able to help the Hispanic community through service to their children and educating them in Spanish. Oneofhergoalsisto bring more Hispanic personelle to work as teachers in the Salt Lake District. Between 1976 and 1986 Preddy managed some funds set aside bythe governmenttor giving financial supporttoHispanics who wanted to become teachers. Aproximately 40 Hispanics were able to graduate as teachers that way and they were working forthe Salt Lake School! District. Now she makes great efforts to get those funds again which allow Hispanics to receive their teaching certificates and enterthe district's bilingual program. Preddy believes very strong that a child that doesn't: receive instructions in histher own language is being denied an education, as well as the opportunity . to preserve the language of his! her fathers and their culture. "We already know that the regular american education system doesn't give positive results for educating children that speak another language, and itis for that reason that they are always behind academically", said Oseguera. "The system has done a , lotof damage to children by foreing them to deney their language and culture, because they have lost their roots and grown up in a world where they don't belong neither to the Hispanic world because of the lack of language to comunicate, Tratado Libre sienten Comercio, el español se ha convertido en una lengua muy importante para el nosolo €tiradalac hispanas sino también americanas porque el serbilingue les abrirá muchas puertas en el campo de los negocios”. "“Nowdays with NAFTA in force, Spanish become a very important language for the future generations , and not only for hispanics but also for americans to be bilingual will open many doors into the business world". Finally, Preddy addressed the youth of * today saying that they need to understand that the tomorrowof their families is starting today. "With sacrifice and strength you can accomplish the goals of bettering yourselves and through study you can have a successful life and offer a future not only to your loved ones but to the Hispanic community as well". "As successful profes: sionals they will be able to occupy positions in which they can help other Hispanics and better their lives of all the Hispanic community inthis country" said Oseguera. seres queridos sino a la comunidad hispana. "The lack of the language also causes some youth to drop out of school because they don't understand the classes very well and they get bad grades which causes their self-esteemto diminish, making it difficult to integrate into an academic world where they are ata disadvantage because it is difficult to understand the classes. Preddy also believes that the Hispanic community should write strongly to reclaim the right for their children to have bilingual education sothatthey can be suc- este país.
