Show TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH THE HEALTH CONSEQUENCES OF CAFFEINE Robert Day MD By In recent years much interest has been generated in the medical effect of caffeine ingestion Caffeine a drug occurring naturally in coffee and cocoa beans tea and kola nuts and an additive in a variety of food items is the most widely consumed drug in Europe and America It is estimated that the average adult consumes 200 mg of caffeine per day Because of its daily existence in our diet adverse effects of this drug could be very prevalent Many studies have attempted to define these effects A summary of these studies covering several areas of concern follows: Cancer— Several studies in the 1970s a relationship suggested between coffee intake and cancer of the bladder and more recently of cancer of the pancreas of the data from these shows there is no clear studies evidence that coffee (cafeine) consumption is related to cancer Breast Disease: AlFibrocystic though abstinence from caffeine is recommended for pafrequently tients with this benign breast disease there is no evidence to support the theory that caffeine is to the development related of fibrocystic breast disease and Low Birth Birth Defects Weight: Concern for this has arisen primarily from animal studies More recent studies of human populations including a study of 12000 births in that other have revealed Boston factors are responsible (eg cigarette smoking) There is minimal if effects on the outcome of any pregnancy due to caffeine consumpin available human tion based studies Ulcer Disease and Secretion of Stomach Acid: It has been known since the 1940s that caffeine can acid secretion stimulate gastric however studies Recent clearly coffee and show that decaffeinated coffee cause more acid regular secretion than caffeine alone indicating that chemicals in coffee other than caffeine also cause acid secretion there have Surprisingly been few studies of coffee’s role in causing peptic ulcer No data exists that shows a positive correlation Effects on the Heart: No evidence of a causitive effect for heart attack exists It is widely felt however that patients with certain abnormal heart rhythms should not consume caffeine In conclusion it appears that moderate coffee and tea drinkers do not need probably to be concerned for their health relative to caffeine consumption It remains for persons prudent to avoid excessive consumption of caffeine especially those with certain heart diseases CAFFEINE IN COMMON BEVERAGES AND FOODS Substance Amount Mg Coffee 5 8 oz cup Just for today Just for today I will exercise my soul in three ways: I will do somebody a good turn and not get found out if anybody knows of it will not count I will do at least two things don’t want to do -
