Show Page 2 Millard County Thurs Oct l)SPS 25 1984 Guest Editorial (ffmnmente All the cleaning did in the bedroom was rather futile With school out Monday Rita had a bad cleaning spell and moved all the paper work have accumulated from the various committees am on to the bedroom floor It will be a full day project just to sort it out and then move it to another room have tried to instill in the children that a family can be healthy without fanatic cleaning but children never listen It took me three years after Arlene left to find my cold packer that she put away during one of her cleaning spells It is nice to have a big house when which am you are an accumulator because things can just be shuffled from room to room and for a long time you can bluff people into thinking you are making some progress in cleaning and throwing things out After awhile it all catches up with you though which it has with me and that is one of the reasons don’t have drawer and closet space in the bedroom still have the wool skirts and sweater sets that I wore in junior high tucked away in the closets and drawers But wool lasts a long time if you take care of it and and when the styles come back I’ll be all set I’ll have to lose about five pounds or at least it or nothing will fit but that is hardly a reason for throwing anything out But now that am in the ladies weight lifting class I’ll be back in those skirts long before the style comes back All spring kept saying that when the weather warmed up I would have a yard sale as they are all the vogue these days and what is one person’s junk is another’s treasure Then in the summer I kept saying next weekend when I’m not so busy and now it is too cold and besides I don’t have any junk it is all treasures Heart Attack claims IPP worker An IPP worker who collapsed near Unit Scrubber Tuesday afternoon succumbed to an apparent heart attack at the West Millard Hospital a few hours later Dead at 62 is Fred Humphrey Hansen Payson Ut who was taken to the hospital by the IPP ambulance He was employed at the site by General Electric Environmental Services 77 7 We need your help are not so naive as to believe that all this will be easy nor accomplished overnight But it is a first step towards fuller understanding the problem and appreciating the worth of young people they believe The ideas of youth and sincerely being sought Under the direction of Ella Sannes and friends "Sound Off” will be revitalized For those unaware of this project it is an informal between law enforcement and youth to discuss matters of mutual concern The possibility of establishing a hot line is being explored as well as establishing a Big BrotherBig Sister program in the area A slightly altered concept of the latter is already underway “Our area should be involved in projects that utilize the energies and talents of youth We should help all children realize they are special and have some something to contribute to the area We need advise We need help We need action A united force of adults and youth just may be able to help some very special young people realize they have great worth and that that worth is valued" Mrs Sannes said It’s time we attempt something constructive was the concensus of a large West Millard group of interested residents last Tuesday afternoon as they met to discuss ways to help combat use of drugs and alcohol by area youth Spearheaded by Peggy Overson and Sarah Inez Moody the group included youth educators religious leaders stae representaiv Delta Police Department Millard county Sheriff’s Office and Mr and Mrs John Q Public And a movement with positive overtones is now underway The first objective of such a movement according to Mrs Overson and Mrs Moody is to make the community at large aware that use of drugs and alcohol by youth is here today “Use of drugs and alcohol is on the increase again by high school students” Sheriff Ed Phillips said Concurring is Police Chief Greg Cooper The degree of use is unkown Of more concern to Tuesday’s meeting was “out there” youth need help in building and learning how to say “no” when it really counts Other objectives include people helping each other youtl: to youth youth to parents and adults parents and other adults to youth supporting the programs which deal with drugs and alcohol by young people which are now in place helping and supporting parents who are now struggling with the problem of drug and alcohol use by their children helping parents of younger children become more aware of what they can do in terms of prevention helping to build mutual respect and trust between youth and the community Those in attendance at the meeting Publicity through the media schools churches adult and youth organizations is of great importance as well as an alertness by the community to those who furnish area youth with drugs and alcohol Perhaps an indepth study of Utah laws concerning drug and alcohol use by youth as well as those who furnish to youth is needed The next meeting of the local support for Tuesday group is scheduled November 13 7:30 pm In the meantime everyone is encouraged to attend the Sheriff’s Office sponsored Drug Awareness Seminar at Delta High November 6 at 7:30 pm Temporary Services sets us straight ii mini (7T) ii ill""1 Support the March of Dimes mhbb this space contributed the publisher
