Mr. Robert Downing who comes hero Wednesday evening In ''The Gladiator" tells the following lnterst-Ing lnterst-Ing story concerning his early work In this notable production: "When I first took the role of "The Gladiator some of the big fellows of tho day came to sec me .and some of them criticised me In a grand way. They would toll me that my conception of the dress, etc., was all wrong. Now, historically there is not much of Spar-tacus, Spar-tacus, and 1 pocecded to give these critics crit-ics that history. 1 showed them that Spartacus was a simple Thracian shepherd, and dressed In skins 'when captured and brought to Rome. That was told in tho first act, and, ,1 wore beard while Forrest was shaven. I showed that it was only in tho second act that he was a gladiator and then he became one only for his wife and child, and that he did not tight for tho mere love of lighting, but for wife and child and freedom. Ho escapes from Rome, and with seventy men defeats three thousand, and next is a general commanding an army of 100,000 men. After I set them right historically they took more kindly to me In time, and It gave me pleasure to win tho old fellows over. Since then my "Gladiator" has been a success, ever a success. The people seem to like it just as well as they did years ago and I am still presenting It because the people still ask for it, Though I have moro than twenty-live plays in my repertoire, In all of which I have starred, "Tho Gladiator" is tho most popular of them all. That Mr. Downing Is right in his belief that "The Gladiator" Is still popular, Is attested by tho large and cnthuslatlc houses which have greeted him everywhere. Ho Is now touring under tho direction of the Western Theatrical Association and will present pres-ent "The Gladiator" with his own company at tho Opera Houso on tho cvcof.Ian. 21, loox O. K.
