Show BRADLEY'S ANTI-"MORMON" SCHEME.

The resolution ordered by Major Bradley, in the Republican convention recently held in Salt Lake city, to the effect that steps should at once be taken for the consummation of an alliance between all the people of Utah outside the "Mormon" church for the purpose of unitedly opposing it, if not an emanation from the brain of a demagogue, is very apt to be mistaken for it. Such measures of a temporary expediency, which are born in a minute and die in an hour, because nourished by the poisonous pabulum of bigotry and hatred, are woefully impotent and leave nothing behind them but an unpleasant odor. The fact is, Major Bradley has been for some time enacting the role of shuttle cock for the dozen or more factions into which the so-called "Liberal" party of Utah is split up; he is always endeavoring, with unceasing desire and fruitless effect, to secure a haven of ??? for his quixotic emanation, and finding no combination of persons who are willing to adopt them, he slyly seeks to create a party for the purpose - he that will receive him and his dogmas in a spasmodic but eternal embrace. The manner in which the little bait was received (only three vetos in favor of it) ought to be a dampener to the Major's ardor, and convince him once for all that Democrats and Republicans are so nearly dramatically opposed to each other that not even the prospect of an onslaught upon the "Mormons" can prompt them to fuse; he would do well to sell stocks entirely, and leave politics alone. |
