Show DESERVED DISTINCTION. Under the above caption, the Deseret Evening New s, the organ of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, jays a splendid and worthy tribute to the life and work and character of the Rt. Rev. Bishop Scania n of Salt Lake. The comment was inspired by a telegraphic tel-egraphic dispatch in the daily press to the effect that our Bishop had been named, among others, for the Arch-episcopal Arch-episcopal See" of Dubuque, la., to succeed suc-ceed the late Archbishop Hennessy. While the Catholic people generally will appreciate this expression of high regard for their Bishop, coming as it does from an official source of the dominant dom-inant church in Utah, yet we are not the least concerned over the prospective removal of the eminent prelate from our midst, even to occupy the more exalted ex-alted station of Archbishop in the ancient an-cient Catholic Church. Bishop Scanlan himself prefers to remain re-main here in Utah where he has passed the greater portion of his life; where he pioneered the faith, where he laad broad and solid and lasting the foundations foun-dations of the Church, where he is known and respected and loved here, where his early ambitions are now being be-ing so swiftly realized in the building of Cathedral, schools and orphanages; here where he is doiDg God's great work. The News editorial, to which reference refer-ence is made, is as follows: "The nomination of Bishop Scanlan for the high position of Archbishop in the Roman Catholic Church, is appreciated appreci-ated not only by his co-religionists in Utah, but by many people who dissent I from his religious views. They respect the prelate and admire him for his consistency, ability and liberality of thought and action. "By the latter term we do not mean any latitude of opinion that would weaken in the least his attachment to the dogmas and discipline of the great ecr-lesiartical organization with which j he is identified, but a disposition to rec-fignizc rec-fignizc the legal right of other people to worship in freedom as conscience dictates. "So far as we know, the Bishop has not joined in any of the deceptive and intolerant measures adopted by sectarian sectari-an preachers against the 'Mormons.' He has maintained his own position without improper interference with theirs. For this reason he is regarded by them with esteem, and we wish him , the success that appears to await him. I "Of course this nomination does not mean, at present, his certain preferment. prefer-ment. That will depend upon further action by the chief authorities of the Roman hierarchy. But if he shall achieve this distinction, the people, of this region, w hile they would regret his departure from among them, would rejoice re-joice in his deserved promotion." |
