The following extract ex-tract is taken from the letter: "En route to Manila, Archbishop Chapelle was insulted by Major Kirkman, Kirk-man, who was in command of the transport. The major hung his blanket, to be aired, so it covered the window of the Archbishop's ftate room. Archbishop Arch-bishop Chapelle sent his secretary to the major to complain that he was unable un-able to air his state room. Major Kirkman Kirk-man replied that he did not care whether wheth-er the Plate room was aired or not. The archbishop endured the insult without further protest during the trip. When the transport arrived in Manila bay, General Otis sent hirj staff officer out to meet it in a launch. The officer went on board and invited the arch- j bishop to proceed by launch to the city, i This precedence astounded Kirkman, who had not been aware that the duties du-ties of the archbishop were official. "When Archbishop Chapelle waa leaving the transport he was asked by-several by-several officers if he would report the insult. He replied: 'Yes; not that it will benefit me, but to prevent like in-eulta in-eulta to those who come after me." Major Kirkman is now being court-martialed court-martialed for the insult. The charge is 'conduct unbecoming an officer.' If convicted con-victed he will be dismissed from the army." |
