Show I OBITUARY. ( DEATH OF SISTER 31. 'RITA. The announcement of the death of Sister M. Rita came from St. Mary's academy, Notre Dame, Ind., last Friday. Fri-day. Sister Rita was the daughter of General J. J. Heffernan, who was well known in Utah in the early '70s. As Louise Heffernan she was one o'f the first pupils of St. Mary's academy in this city, and for conduct und bril- liancy won the first gold medal do- j nated by D. C. McGlynn at the end of j the first term of the school in 1S76. General Heffernan was one of the 1 pioneer prospectors in Goose Creek, ; where he succeeded in amassing a small fortune, and then moved, ' with his family to Corinne, Utah, ,vheie he j remained until 1875, when the family j i. . .. : ! ( ! La i located in Salt Lake. He died in St. Louis in 1886. Louise, the oldest member of a large family, was the first applicant from Utah to become a sister of the Holy Cross community. Her talents won for her high recognition in the order." St. Mary's Chimes, one of the best and brightest college journals to be found anywhere, was edited by her for many years. . She was the author of "The Book of the Lily and Other Verses," published by the Ave Maria Press in 1909. This consists of sixty-four sonnets. " embracing- the entire life of the Blessed Virgin, all full of simple piety and sincere devotion. In addition there are fifty-five different subjects, entitled. en-titled. "Miscellaneous Verses," all making a neat book of 123 pages. From the latter we take a short paem entitled "THE SHAMROCK." "A little spray of shamrock , Has brought before my eyes The loveliest sea-girt island That rests beneath God's skies. I see its hills and valleys. Its fields of emerald sheen- -Fair types of Erin's banner. The sun burst on the green! "I see the forms of loved, ones, To heart and memory dear; And land and friends and hearth stone. Are framed within a tear." In Utah, where Sister Rita spent her early life, many friends of the family will deplore her early demise. Requiem mass was celebrated for the repose of her soul Tuesday morning at the cathedral,- and on Wednesday high mass was sung at St. Mary's asademy for her peaceful repose. To the Sisters of the Holy Cross the In-termountain In-termountain Catholic extends its deepest deep-est sympathy in the loss of one of its most brilliant and talented members of the order. |
