Show THE STAGE AND THE CHURCH. Mr. Augustin Daiy, the gifted playwright, play-wright, represents a type of the intelligent intel-ligent layman who, in his sphere, is doing very remarkable work for the ad- j vance-of the Church. The Catholic World Magazine for March publishes the story of the "Daly Bible." While conducting a first-class theatre on the highest ethical principles, Mr. Daly utilized his leisure to prepare this wonderful won-derful Bible, which, in its magnificence, reminds one of the days of the Medici. The article says of the man and his work: "The keystone to the remarkable book collection of the late Mr. Augustin Daly is the Douai Bible. The story of how the gifted playwright and master stage manager extended, at a cost of $18,000, the original edition of one volume to. forty-two folio volumes by the insertion inser-tion of more than 8,000 rare prints, engravings, en-gravings, etchings, water-colors and mezzotints, recalls the munificence of the Medicis, and is refreshing evidence of the deep religious feeling of the man whose lifework has loft indelible impression im-pression not only upon the artistic growth of New York, but upon the entire en-tire country. It is less than a year since Augustin Daly passed to his reward, re-ward, and the public has yet to waken to a true estimate of what he effected through his plays and his theatres for art end morals. It was his ambition to make the playhouse the handmaid of the pulpit. For more than thirty years Mr. Daly's playhouse was, in the homes of conservative culture, the fynonyme of all that is clean, wholesome, and uplifting in the world of entertainment." entertain-ment." 4 . |
