Show farm message Is inadequate president eisenhower Elsen hower sent his farm message to the congress last week he did little more than re state the policies and plans that have been discussed for months yet there was an earnestness a bout the message which causes one to know that mr air eisenhower Elsen hower wishes he could do something so methin g about the farm situation some persons may say that the president of course wants to benefit the farmer in this election year it would mean votes for the party in power but beyond politics there is a note in mr air eisenhower Elsen hower s message which indicates a genuine desire to help the farmer and make his place in the american economy more pro bitable at the beginning of Us his message the president told his feelings about the farmer and his difficulties mr eisenhower Elsen hower said no problem be fo fore e congress demands more urgent bention attention than the paradox facing our farm families although agri culture is our basic industry they find their prices and incomes de pressed amid the nations greatest prosperity for five years their economy has declined unless cor reeled their economy reversals are a direct threat to the well being of all our people it is on this note of understanding I 1 and sympathy that the president began his message the same note of concern continues throughout the message but sympathy and wishes solve no hard economic difficulties and despite the president presidents s kind feelings one finds in the message ro convincing solution of the farm er ers s plight in particular there is no satis factory answer to low farm pieces prices nor to the disposition of the map oth surpluses now plaguing the cou mr air benson who chiefly Is res pon sible for the program offered by the president went back to the old wallace plan of crop control and back to the brannan plan of sub sidles the terms and labels in mr air eisenhower Elsen hower s message are different but the republicans of 1956 have borrowed the basic features of their agricultural program from the days of mr air roosevelt and mr truman those programs may have been beneficial in their times tunes but chev are not succeeding now it was the responsibility of the republican administration to come up with a wiser and better fetter adapted program the administration chasn it done it instead it was merely offer ed a warmed over policy which win will not establish a suitable market fou ri dation for the f farmer armer it will not bring the nation s economy into pro per balance the farm problem is far mere than a party issue it is profound national difficulty which must be solved |
