Show DAVI8 REFLEX JOURNAL, MAY 23, 1984 r Taylor And Emery Lead The Way bontlnuod... 5 breaks Record yefrr, said Thompson in dismay. But I still wonder sometimes about how it could have been if we hadn't had such a bad handoff in the sprint relay or if theyre relay team (Weber's) hadnt been rein stated after being disqualified." It does leave a lot to wonder about when you consider that the Clearfield womens sprint relay team had failed to lose all season long. One misjudged handoff hurt them badly. (1980) had an athletic thrill last week, along with about 50 local youth, as their first annual Shooting for Success basketball clinic was a smashing hit. By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports KAYSVILLE - A couple of for-mDavis High graduates, Brian er -- Taylor (1982) and Jeff Emery graders, along with 26 seventh and eighth graders, worked for one week with Taylor and Emery to improve their skills in shooting, ballhandling, free throws, re- bounding and defensive AT LEAST 25 fifth and sixth FOR SENIORS like Laura Zaugg, Sharon Anderson, Kris Done, Lisa Garcia, Tammy Weaver and Mandy Hennenberger, it was the last chance of theirs to bring a coveted state championship to the school. "But I have to think that Laura and the rest of the seniors did more than just make this year the success that it turned out to be, said When it was all over," said I couldnt believe how Taylor, some kids had improved so much. There were a few kids that Im sure will make basketball a regular thing in their lives after improving so much in our camp. Of course thats what these things are all about, to give everyone a chance to learn and improve. THE WEEK-LONbasketball clinic was sponsored in part by Harrys Thriftway of Kaysville and Kaysville Drug. On Saturday afternoon every participant was awarded a special Shooting for Success There were also numerous other trophies and plaques given for special attention in all areas of basketball skills. TAYLOR, WHO leaves Thursmisday, May 31 for an sion for the LDS Church to Spain, commented again, I knew wed get a lot of kids that already loved basketball and knew how to play, but 1 was really impressed with the number of kids that turned out who were medicore at first but at weeks end were playing pretty sharp." Both Taylor and Emery were outstanding basketball talents at Davis High under the reign of Mike Gardner. Thompson, "Hopefully their efforts will get more girls coming out for track and start a little tradition for us, maybe something like what the boys have going. "WE NEED MORE girls because depth, either the lack of it on our part or Webers abundance, cost us the region and state championships. That was the only thing they had that we didn't. But there were a lot of brilliant things that took place for the Lady Falcons at the 84 meet. You could start first with Zaugg's win in the 300 hurdle race where she set a new state record of 44.16, breaking the old mark set back in 1980 by Jennifer James of Roy. Laura also finished second to Susan DeVries in the 10 hurdle race, was second in the 100 meters to her teammate Stephanie Clements and was third in the 100 meter race. Brian Taylor, former Davis High basketball star, judges Brad Gardner (with ball) in ball handling skills. It was all a part of the Shooting for Success camp. Fifth and sixth grade winners in Shooting for Success camp were (top row), Edward Mitchell, Tyler Heath. Jason Smith. Jon Rhodes and Owen Fisher. Bottom row, Brad Gardner, Todd Heath and Nathan Fisher. 1 "LAURA IS THE hardest worker qn the team, said Thompson, She finished her workouts right to the very end. Laura had a little ability during her high school career but most of what she accomplished came from sheer hard work. She is one of those athletes that does a lot better than she is supposed to. Shes one of those girls that coaches just love to have, I wish we had 15 more of her. AND SHE LOVED to win at Clearfield. That was very evident when she lunged at the tape to try and win the 200 meters. augg has already qualified for the National Junior Olympics hepthalon and is just 1100's of a second from qualifying in the 300 hurdle race. BUT DO YOU want to know who really made the difference?, asked Thompson, It was kids like Done, Garcia and Anderson. They were the unsung heroes of this team, the girls who were always there. Without them we wouldnt have been a team, maybe just a team. Done, last week, helped the team by taking fifth in the 400 meters and was a member of the winning 1600 meter relay. Garcia was another utility person who rose tip strong in the 1600 meter relay race and helped with that first place. Anderson was also a member of the 1600 meter relay and finished third in both hurdle races.
