Not only has UVU held its own in D-I competition, but has left several universities known for theirathletic teams with their tails between their legs. The sports that will kick things off for the Wolverines in the fall will be the women's soccer team, winners of the United Soccer Conference tournament last season, and the women's volleyball team, which enjoyed its best season last year. The cross-country teams will begin their run at another successful season as well. Without a football team to cheer on in the fall, these teams have proven worthy of student support. In 2007 UVU soccer standout Jenni Clough became the all-time leading goal scorer to don a Wolverine uniform. She scored eight goals last season and will look to improve on that mark in 2008. The Wolverines on the court aren't lacking in star power either as they collectively found a way to win more than 20 matches last year. Whether you prefer men's hoops or women's both will put on an exciting show this season. Two of the best players in the nation will be suiting up for UVU as they each enter their senior seasons. Ryan Toolson for the men's team averaged nearly 24 points a game last year, while post-player sensation Robyn Fairbanks will look to have another All-American season as her, team*will aim to surpass last year's 16 wins. As part of becoming a university, and with the influx in school pride, it's time to support our university's athletic program and fill the seats. All-time goals scored leader at. In 2006 the National Golf Coaches Association named him the National Assistant Coach of the Year. Former Wolverines flourish in Minor Leagues Three former Utah Valley University baseball players are having outstanding seasons in the minor leagues. Marcus Moore, who graduated just this spring as UVU's all-time wins leader, has been untouchable in his relief role on the mound for the Rookie Gulf Coast League Orioles this summer. He has pitched 14.1 innings without allowing a run, and has 26 strikeouts — nearly two K's per inning. He is 2-0 wilh two saves and a 0.00 eamed-run average. In his last outing Thursday against the GLC Red Sox he threw two scoreless innings, striking out five. Former Wolverine called up by Baltimore Orioles Former UV pitcher Kam Mickolio was called up to Major League Baseball by the Baltimore Orioles last week and with his first appearance will become the first UVU player to play in a big-league game. "From where Kam started to where he is now is a testament to how hard he's worked," said Utah Valley Baseball coach Eric Madsen, who coached Mickolio as a head coach at Eastern Utah for one season and two seasons as an assistant at Utah Valley. "He's a great kid and he worked at it and kept after it, and I'm just so excited for him and for our program." The Bozeman Montana native pitched at Utah Valley in 2005 and 2006, throwing two shutouts during his senior season for the Wolverines. He was drafted in the 18th round of the 2006 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners and later traded to Baltimore in a deal that sent pitcher Erik Bedard to Seattle. *Mickolio began the 2008 season at double-A Bowie, where he was 2-1 with 4.70 ERA.
