The Wolverines committed a combined six errors in the doubleheader. Nevada (16-24), last years WAC tournament champions, swept the twin bill, extending to an impressive eight game winning streak. They held off the feisty Wolverines in close games. The Wolverines had many opportunities to capitalize on offense, but the chips fell out of place, resulting in many runners being left on base. UVSC Coach Todd Fairbourne said, "When we put ourselves in a position to win a game, we . need to find a way to win." Corie Jensen suffered the loss in the first game for the Wolverines (10-21), dropping her record to 5-7. In five innings, she struck out three and allowed six hits in the 6-4 defeat. Nevada's team captain junior Jordan McPherson, picked up the win," improving her record to 9-12. McPherson pitched a complete game, striking out seven batters. The Wolverines held a two run lead until the fifth inning, when the Wolf Pack took advantage of three UVSC errors, scoring four runs in the process. UVSC bounced back and tied the game at four in the sixth inning. Natalie Paulsen doubled, scoring Heidi Boyer before being ushered in herself on a SaraRoskelley single. Nevada's Brittany Puzey hit a two-run homerun in the final inning to give the Wolf Pack the 6-4 lead, which would prove to be the final score. UVSC lost 4-3 in the final game, but it took an extra inning for the Wolf Pack to hold off the Wolverines. Only one of Nevada's four runs was earned in the eight-inning loss. Louisiana Tech is hoping former Utah Jazz legend and Tech alum Karl Malone isn't going to effect a complete 360 to its basketball team. The Bulldogs went just 10-20 this season. Karl Malone is reportedly going to become an assistant coach for the Bulldogs. Former University of Utah assistant Kerry Rupp is going to take over for Keith Richard, fired after nine years, and Rupp is hiring the Mailman. Malone, the second all-time scorer in the NBA, is picking up the clipboard. Malone will be back in basketball after retiring and working on tractors for most of the last few years. Real Salt Lake talking playoffs early Ben Webster Sports Writer The- playoffs are six months away but that wasn't stopping Real Salt Lake players and coaches from talking about the postseason before the regular season even started. The guarantees are out there as well; with Captain Jason Kreis guaranteeing a playoff spot the week before the team faced FC Dallas at Rice-Eccles Stadium in the season opener. "It's [the playoffs] on all our minds," Coach John Ellinger said. "Our thought process is to finish first or second in our conference to make sure we make the playoffs." A major factor in whether or not Real plays its first postseason game in franchise history will be how well the new additions blend in with the old players. Goalie Nick Rimando and MLS celebrity Freddy Adu have been able to gain the trust of teammates quickly. Adu said, "I'm at a point where there's mutual respect between myself and the guys." Adu and forward Jeff Cunningham will be expected to make defenses worry about where the attack will come from. Real will be looking to con- trol the ball offensively and rely less on counter attacks with the offensive additions. Luis Tejada, from Panama, was also added to be a powerful striker but Ellinger doesn't expect his impact to be as immediate as Adu's. See Real • D3 |
