Their design proposals will be on display in the office of the Associate Vice President of Facilities Planning, Jim Michaelis, on Wednesday. May 17th. The proposals will be judged on May 24th and the winning team will be awarded the project." The only project that is already underway on campus is located outside the enclosed bridge that leads from the PE Building to the Mckay Events Center. There is open space at the east end of the bridge on both sides between the bridge itself and existing sections of the PE building. This space is being developed into more study space and will also be the new location of the snack kiosk that currently occupies the PE concourse. The project was awarded to locally based Broderick and Henderson Construction whose project superintendent happens to be UVSC alumnus Darren Miller. Miller graduated with the Class of 1994 in construction management. When asked how work was progressing. Miller responded, "We've found some concrete cleanout pipes that arc not allowed by code to exist inside a building, so before we can continue, we have to dig them up and replace them with PVC." When asked if this somewhat unforeseen complication has pushed his schedule back, Miller admits "It has definitely slowed us down. You just never know what you're going to find once you start digging." He went on to add "As long as we're finished before fall semester begins, the school will be happy with us." When asked if there would be any "As long as we're finished before fall semester begins, the school will be happy with us." -Darren Miller Broderick and Henderson Construction barricades or hallway closures Miller said, "I'm planning on leaving the existing glass walls up until the structure is fully erected, this way the only hallway closures would be during the couple of days when we are removing the glass walls. This should eliminate any safety issues with people passing by." Yet another project that is currently underway is the new Wolverine Servic- es Center. This new facility will occupy the former ALLC building located at the northwest corner of campus. The existing building is currently in the finishing stages of being remodeled and should already have new carpet installed with furniture scheduled to go in on June 5th. Once final inspection is completed, the Wolverine Services Center will house both Testing Services and Parking Services under one roof. Also this summer, the Central Plant will be getting a new roof. The roof of the Central Plant lies underneath the sidewalk and grass passage between the Library and the Student Center. The roof underneath the sidewalk and landscaping is thirty years old and has a leaking problem. Therefore, that section of sidewalk is tentatively scheduled to be closed off, the landscaping ripped up and the roof replaced sometime this summer. There are a few other more minor projects that will be going on at various locations around campus, none of which are large enough to cause any problems other than a little dust and noise. So if you happen to run across these or any other construction and maintenance projects, don't get bummed out by the inconvenience. Try to remember that they are the necessary growing stages of a school that is working to advance its standing in the academic world. Planning ahead Discover the wests premier fine jewelers... The most common concerns students have are those concerning various campus services, student fees, instructor complaints, and departmental complaints. Once ASUVSC catches wind of a problem they can go straight to the source and make sure the issues are addressed. "Students have a lot more pull on what goes on around campus then they know," said Marisa Newmann, Vice President of student activities. On a regular basis ASUVSC meets with the college president and many departments throughout the school to discuss student issues. 'The previous student government built good bridges with the administration, and we plan on continuing our close work with them." When it comes to making decisions concerning the students, ASUVSC plans on getting a consensus of what the student body wants. Even if ASUVSC doesn't agree with the majority they will go along with what the student body wants. One particular topic ASUVSC hopes to receive student support for is that of free campus-wide wireless Internet for students.
