Fi r a week or more a blankety-blank blankety-blank fog has been afflicting the peu le of Salt Lake, and the other day it reached this place. It tarried but a f ;w days, and t he fact that it pulled up and left on the day the new City Council went into otllce may or may not be a startling coincidence. Mayor Reynolds, when asked about the matter, merely smiled and looked wise. "Some time ago my daughter caught a severe cold. She complained com-plained of pains in her chest and had a bad cough. I gave her Chamberlain's Chamber-lain's Cough Remedy according to directions and in two days she was well and able to go to school. I have used this remedy in my family for the past seven years and have never known it to fail," says James Prendergast, merchant, Annato Bay, Jamaica, West India Islands. The pains in the chest indicated an approaching attack of pneumonia, which in this instance was undoubtedly un-doubtedly warded ofl by Chamberlain's Chamber-lain's Cough Remedy. It counteracts any tendency of a cold toward pneumonia. pneu-monia. Sold by Springville Drug Co. One of the smoothest fakirs who has been to this city for years held forth on Reynolds' coiner Tuesday afternoon. He was a typical patent medicine vendor, and a master of his craft Many people who didn't know what else to do with their money got separated from it very easily. A crop of suckers ripens here every year and the fakirs And them ready to pluck. The ''Doctor" promised to remain here several days, but instead went to Provo. A drnmmer claims to have seen him in that city, where he was accumulating a glorious jag and boasting of how he worked the verdant and rural-like Springvillese. His afternoon's work here netted him $78, and he seemed to think it came "so easy." How about that, you easy marks who gave your money to another man to buy booze with? The .Spirit of Winter. The Spirit of Winter is with us, making its presence known In many different ways sometimes by cheery sunshine and glistening snows, and sometimes by driving winds and blinding storms. To many people it seems to take a delight in making bad things worse, for rheumatism twist harder, twinges sharper, catarrh becomes be-comes more annoying, and many symptoms of scrofula are developed and aggravated. There is not much poetry in this, but there Is truth, and it is a wonder that more people don't get rid of these ailments. The medicine that cures them Hood's Sarsaparilla is easily obtained anil there is abundant proof that Its cures are radical and permanent. At the special school meeting held last night at the Central school building build-ing the citizens voted some very important improvements in the educational line, 'i lie meeting was very business like, and though there was some nppositioi from foes of education it availed nothing, A motion by John S. Rrtver to the effect that a High school be established estab-lished prevailed, and this important Institution will be a feature next year. Frank Bringhurst moved that a levy of 5 mills special tax be made for two years, the funds so raised to be devoted to the building of two school houses, ti cost $5000 each. This also carried. A rumor anil a few hand bills are floating around town to the effect that the elocutionist, Miss Barry, is to appear ap-pear at the city hall Monday evening. It is rumored that an iron-clad ordinance or-dinance on the subject, of liquor is to tic introduced in the Council soon. This measure is to provide that anyone any-one owning or conducting a house, room or place of business where liquor li-quor is kept or drank shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and punished accordingly. ac-cordingly. Drinking in public places atid at dances is also to m dealt with. If the temperance people exert sulll-cient sulll-cient pressure they can no doubt secure se-cure the. passage of such an ordinance tiut it is doubted If it can lie passed except under pressure. Such an ordinance, or-dinance, if strictly enforced, would go far to remove the reputation this city labors uuder as being a prohibition prohibi-tion town with a saloon town's maximum maxi-mum of drunkeuess and vi?e. But would such an ordinance be constitutional? constitu-tional? The Independent would like to see it tried. - . Tlic Secret of Long Life. Prof. Scripture of Vale university has invented a new term, "cross-education," which he gives to the results upou the organs of the opposite side of the body from exercise of a limb or organ. The simplest instance Is that a gain of 70 per cent in strength of the right hand from exercising it alone secures a gain of 50 per cent in the unexercised left hand. The law holds not only as regards strength, but also in other qualities. The fact helps to explain why in right-handed people, for Instance, the left retains so much strength and expertness. The question ques-tion also arises If other organs than corresponding ones may not be influenced, in-fluenced, for example, the left foot by l.ieana of exercise of the right hand. Why are right-handed soldiers re-milreil re-milreil to step off with the left foot ilrst? "The best foo covering in the world for the men who have to walk ibout In all sorts of places," said a professional hunter .a the employ of a marketman, "is the cloth used Id the German army in place of socks. A friend of mine sent me a couple of samples last fall, and I gave them a thorough trial. The result is that I'm never going to wear anything e'so when I'm out on a hunt. The cloth Is made of medium-weight woolen goods and is about the size and shipe of "an old bandana handkerchief. It is simply folded about the foot an4 then tied around Me ankle with piece of tape. At first blush," the hunter went on, "that would seem to be a very uncomfortable arrangement, and I felt certain that the creasej would make the thing a torment to wear, but I can only say that they do nothing of the kind. Of course, a great deal depends upon the way the cloth is folded, and I found, after some experimenting, that the best scheme was to place the foot In the center and then cross the sides diagonally over the top of the instep. Drawing up the back completed a sort of rotttth moccasin, which the tape kept flrm'j In position. I wore an extra krgi shoe and never felt a erease." Card of Thanks.
