Very truly yours, I Wm. F. Gibson. When your firmness pleases, it is resolution. When it doesn't it is just bull haeded obstinacy. Eloping is dangerous in Alabama, Ala-bama, where a father shot a man who went to elope with his daughter, also a friend with him. General Chaffee seems inclined inclin-ed to think tbat the Pillipinos resemble American Indians in one respect the only good ones are the dead ones. It has again been demonstrated demonstra-ted that such substantial bodies as steam locomotives cannot safely pass through the same section of space at the same time. As to the woman of 50 who has sued for damages on account of breach of promise of marriage there is no occasion for mirth. It is a serious matter to a woman of that age. Mrs. Emile. Boas says of American women, "She has just a little too much adoration. She must be worthy of her inheritance in-heritance and liberty she enjoys must uot become lisence." Senator Mason would betttr not be too precipitate in assisting assist-ing those who are fighting re forms in the carrying of second class mail. It is likely to be more dangerous than profitable. . The cost of living in Wash ington having materially in creased the cost of dying has been increased by undertakers by raising the prices for use of c images and hearses at funerals ' It's a hard job" says a Yo - kum (Tex.) editor, "for a fellow to grind out poetry, collect sub- scriptions, run the job press and manage a paper all at the same time. o it is, brother, tjuit grinding out poetry. The best forts for the protec tion of the Isthmian canal will be battleships. A fort that cau get up and pursue an enemy at the rate of seventeen miles an hour or retreat at the same speed is best in the long run. A Chicago coroner recently decided the contention between livorced parents over the burial of their six year old child by permitting the father to have a funeral and bury the body and then allowing the mother to disinter it, hold another funeral and re-bury it. A dispatch from Ci i o pays that in view of the approachiug visit of .J Pierpont Morgan to Egypt, workmen are cn- gaged screwing down the pyramids pyr-amids and hobbling the front feet of the Spninx. Mr. Frank T. Howard, of New Orleans, has just donated to that city a magnificent primary school. In his presentation speech he said, "The greatest need today in our large cities is primary education, the education educa-tion of the masses, the education educa-tion of the common people, who are the brawn and sinew of the community." Provo is a more or less "well regulated saloon" town. The attention of Springville liquor advocates is called to the report of the Provo Mar3hal for 1901, which tells of 47 arrests for intoxication, in-toxication, i4 of minors in saloons sa-loons and 7 faes of illegal liquor liq-uor selling. There were also 40 arrests for disturbance of the peace and 25 for assault and battery, which may or may not have resulted from liquor. It would not appear from the above that saloons were a very highly moralizing influence after all. To read the wise and otherwise other-wise advice of various journals to Mr. Carnegie for the judicious and beneficent disposal of his great wealth one would imagine the writers had studied the subject. There is in the light of evolution and sociology no more knotty question. ques-tion. Charity as a rule results in the propagation of pauperism. Patronage is often twice curst, cursing hira that gives and him that receives. Mr. Carnegie is probably as superior to his ad-visers ad-visers in the distribution of his wealth as he was in its acquisition. acqui-sition. The proper attitude for the world, if it cannot imitate, is to uncover its head and admire. ad-mire. The. President has been much criticised recently because he publicly, as it were, rebuked General Miles for talking too much. It should be remembered, remember-ed, however, that the President is commander-in-chief of the army and navy, and does not know how to "privately" do anything. Whatever he does is open and above boaad. He is an open book. He has a habit of talking out in meeting, and to a knowledge of this habit is doubtless due the fact that he is less harried by place hunters than any previous president. Recently a senator calle 1 at t he White House and plucking Mr. Roosevelt by the sleeve, in low tones persuasively preferred his request. In a voice such as he might have used in command ing a squadron of rough riders, the President was heard to say: "I can't do it, senator. All appointments ap-pointments must be by merit." That senator will probably attend at-tend better to his business at the other end of the avenue in the future and the public will be benefitted by this and by having appointees for fitness and not merely because recommended recom-mended by a senator on the grounds of relationship or because be-cause he helped the senator to get elected. - 4 -- Don't Live Together. Wells have bought some mining property at Nebo, paying pay-ing for it a consideration of 845,000. The property Is situated in North canyon and was owned by Springville parties. These gentleman have made two trips to the ground and are of a firm belief that they have a mine, or else they would not undertake it. They are about to let a contract for the building of a road from the Short Line railroad to the mine, and for this work alone an outlay of several thousand dollars, but the shipping of ore Is awaiting its completion.
