SMITH THE SCENE OF RUN Storm Followed by Fire. Hundreds of People are Injured. Fatalities Fatal-ities From Fire and Falling Fall-ing Walls. i I Fokt Smith, Ark , Jan. l2.-()ne ' of the must terrible storms that ever I struck this feet ion of the country tore through this city shortly before I midnight. Everything is in confus-j confus-j ion as result of the groat destruction destruc-tion of life and property, and as yet it is impossible to give anything like an accurate estimate of the number . of t lie killed and injured. At 12 m. it looks as though tlfty persons have been killed, and the death list is growing hourly. Hundreds of persons per-sons have been injured, some, fatally and some not so badly. 11 any tine residences resi-dences were razed to the ground. Fort Smith lies at the confluence of the Pi tou and Arkansas rivers, which wash its s'luth and west sides, and to the north and east are hills which form a barrier about that section of the town. The storm struck the city in the southwestern section, right at a point where the two rivers come together to-gether and near the old fort. From there It spread out over the whole city, dipping down and scattering destruction here and there. There is . rise in the city to meet the hills on that side, aad most of the'damage to property aud loss of life was through that section. The tornado, after passing through the residence district, did its worst work in that portion of the business districts in which the older buildings are located, and the totals of damage do not amount up yery rapidly, although al-though mauy buildings were partly or wholly ruined. For this reason it is probable that SjOO,000 will cover the loss of buildings and contents, including includ-ing the new 150,000 High school building, build-ing, which was directly in the path of the storm and was badly wrecked. Two of the largest bouses of wor- ! ship in the city, the Baptist aud Cen-: Cen-: tral Methodist churches, were com- pletely destroyed, the Bronscome l church was badly damaged and the tower and roof of the High school building blown off. J The debris of many of the buildings ' In the lodging house district caught J tire aud those unfortunates who were i not at once extricated alive, perished miserably by bo log burned or smothered smoth-ered to death. j Many people in the outside districts 1 were killed in the crash of the falling residences. AH nurses and doctors that, can be pressed into service are being utilized aud there are scores of tempory hospitals through the city in , addilioa to the regular hospitals, where the injured are being taken. The morgue is taxed to its utmost capacity and additional bodies are 1 being brought in erery few minutes. ' Altogether the scene at the place is ! Lii,L',.nir.i in, I l,,.,.riht .1 L 1J I I. U U U tl.lt 1 I 1(1 I . After leaving Fort Smith, the tor-Dado tor-Dado veered over and touched at Alama, about nine miles northeast of here, causing considerable damage, but whether there is any loss of life is not yet known. RAIN FOLLOWED WIND AND FIttE. A heavy rain followed the terrible tornado and it was probably twenty liuutes before all the city awoke to the fact that it had been visited by a calamity. The tire department was called out and in less than thirty minutes min-utes from the arrival of the tornado, the strce s were crowded with people and willing hands wore ready to render ren-der all the aid that the .emergency required. Men and women clad in their night clothes, from the neighboring neigh-boring honses, were seeking shelter and calling for absent members of the family, or friends who failed to escape from the wreck of the buildings in which they had been living. Men, women and children sought refuge in O'Keefe's saloou jincl were afforded shelter. In the back part of the saloon sal-oon a number of the injured were stretched on the floor with only their night clothes to protect them from the chilly mid-night air. The telephone wires were nearly all down and it was impossible to communicate com-municate with any distant point in the outskirts of the city., The streets were so tilled with the debris that it was difticult for carriages to get arouud. AN APPALLING SCENE. 1 The scene Is one of the most appalling appal-ling and destructive ever witnessed in the history of the city, and Is without with-out a parallel in this section of the Southwest.
