The initial response to his work as an artist was in Utah, and many of his early collectors have eagerly watched his development. An inveterate traveler, he has seen much of the world, and his travels have provided him with much of his subject matter. Because of his reputation as a deft portrayer of wildlife, Betts was commissioned by the federal government to do a portrait of the Pandas", presented to this country by the Peoples Republic of China. For this, he was flown to the Washington Zoo, where a special presentation was held. As designer, painter, lecturer, lec-turer, and advisor and consultant con-sultant to the federal government govern-ment in many of its fine arts programs, his path has led him into one gratifying success suc-cess after another.
