Show Wednesday, November 1 7, 1 976 Pago 6 Hankerings BY Hank Louk Summit And w,. , Wasatch Get , JreMSlimO Transportation Hearing By Bill Roland A few of our favorite five o'clock and waters and on the rocks spreading already like petrol in our bloodstream, sitting in color headward.we arrived lukewarm. We went up the stairs to the Rusty Nail Club. We snuck how could you help it peeks into the swivel seat table clothed Garden Room on the way Up.'' .; We were all still laughing and gabbing about the Great Three Kings Drive Economy Car Race over there, all still secretly worried about wound r.p.m. engines. Red lines had been only in eyes. Drink tickets cost a buck, a seemingly small price to pay unitl you had enough and some of us did to use a chains on four tires, or enough to hang medallions from around a couple necks. Then, at the same table but barward, raffle tickets were selling fast as Citizen Band radios. How many? Let's see. We'd read about the nothing to sneeze at prizes ski weekends, booklets of passes. Either run as a longshot with one or better your odds with a bunch. We came out with an inbetween group, named, addressed and phone numbered a while, dropped the right part in the right box. We were swallowed into a packed and also lukewarm cocktail hour where we quickly utilized a few drink tickets. We utilized a few more. About the third time Mr. D.J. told us that dinner was served everyone funnelled back down the stairs to the Garden Room, where salad and good wine awaited. A banquet indeed. Rows and rows of the business community; rows and rows of all weights both heavy and light. Some people we know looked at the place as rows and rows of business cards needed. The Kick-Off dinner was delightful, the wine (because all around us were non-drinkers) in particular. Then some speeches between a few lap flung forks and a sprinkling of spoons some people laughing, --and --and nearly shouting because theydouWrit feaily1 hear anyway ; other people with finger lipV sh-ing. ; " But when they started giving out prizes somehow everybody heard and had tickets in hand. After most of us lost the lottery the crowd began filing out through a carpet of now worthless paper like those you find fronting pari-mutual windows; some heading upstairs for more valuable drink tickets, some heading home. Upstairs there was post-dinner D.J. dancing until about, who knows, one? And before we knew it it was Sunday morning with a sideache and a stiff neck and aspirin and 32 times the adult minimum daily requirement of Vitamin C, all of which gave us a pretty good idea that we'd had a good time. Each Monday, during October 7-1 2 a.m. in the Garden Room Upsets and key field goals reigned supreme Sunday afternoon as most of the Conference races tightened up with four weeks left in the regular season. New York Giant field-goal kicker Joe Danelo booted home a 50-yarder that gave the Giants their first victory of the year and sent the Washington Redskins reeling against the ropes. The loss shoved the Redskins two games behind the St. Louis Cardinals and two and a half back of Dallas in the Eastern Division of the NFC. The Cardinals once' again demonstrated their come-from -behind tactics as Jim Bakken kicked a 25 yard field goal with 4 seconds remaining to lift the Cardinals to a 30-28 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. On Monday night the Dallas Cowboys defeated the stubborn Buffalo Bills 17-10 to remain atop the NFC East with a 9-1 record. San Francisco could have taken the NFC West lead from Los Angeles but instead fell victim to an Atlanta upset, 21-16. The Atlanta Falcons, 7-3 on the year, proved correct the old theory that an on any given Sunday any NFL team can knock off a contender. Speaking of upsets, what about the New England Patriots knocking off perhaps pro football's best team the Baltimore Colts? Quarterback Steve Grogan scored two touchdowns and the New England defense shut out high-scoring Baltimore in the second half and the Patroits posted a 21-14 upset victory over the Colts. . In snapping a six-game Baltimore winning streak the Patriots moved to within a game of the Colts in-the in-the AFC East. Baltimore is 8-2 and the Pats are 7-3. In other AFC games Sunday, Cincinnati clung to a two-game lead in the AFC Central with a thrilling 31-27 victory over Houston. Issac Curtis played a marvelous game including a game winning 47 yard touchdown pass from Kenny Anderson. The miraculous touchdown came on a fouth and four situation and ranked as Howard Cosell's Play of the Week. Elsewhere, Oakland cruised to their ninth victory a 21-10 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Key games this weekend send Los Angeles against San Francisco with, the division lead on the line, while the Redskins face a must-win situation at St. Louis. Next Monday night the Baltimore Colts will try to rebound in the Orange Bowl against the energy riddled Miami Dolphins. College Football This weekend promises to be an exciting one as both participants in the Rose Bowl will be decided. In Columbus, Ohio, the Buckeyes, rated number 8 in the country, will face the Michigan Wolverines, ranked number 4, in a match for the Big Ten Championship. This game will be televised by ABC starting around 10:30 a.m. Following this one, the Pacific Eight title goes on the line, as cross town rivals UCLA and USC face each other for the Conference title and an invitation to the Rose Bowl. Until then, Pittsburgh remains the number one team, but this weekend should provide a real scramble in the top ten Golden Eagles Open Home Stand .The Salt Lake Golden Eagles, after playing 9 of their last 10 games on foreign ice, kick off a 4-game home stand against the rugged Kansas City Blues this Wednesday night. After a strong start, the Eagles have been experiencing their worst goal-scoring lapse in recent memory as five times in their last seven games the Eagles have managed but a single goal. Consequently they have slipped out of first place but a strong series against Kansas City, this Wednesday and Friday and Oklahoma City on Nov. 26 and 27th could push the Big Birds back into the League's number one spot. Although the parent club, the Cleveland Barons have called up high scoring Mike Fiddler and . defense man Glean Patrick, they have not yet sent down their replacements. The new additions should help the Eagles. Presently the Eagles are searching for more scoring punch, maybe this home-stand will send them on their way.
