The unsuspecting homeowner awakens one morning to discover his yard resembles the scene of a spectacular New Years Eve celebration. W Paper streamers flutter from every tree and bush. Even a nearby car is entwined in yards of white paper. Welcome to northern Utah, scene of hundreds of similar tp attacks by youngsters wielding rolls of toilet paper. For at least the past fifteen years, area young people have 4 been purchasing massive amounts of the squeezably soft stuff for what might be charitably described as decorative purposes. Recipients of toilet paper artistry tend to be friends of the midnight raiders, including returning missionaries and favorite church or schoolteachers. A lot of boyfriends do it to their girlfriends and vice versa, said four male high school students. If you like a girl, thats how you impress her. One parent of a teenage son recalled a particularly ardent female admirer who received permission to come inside the house and toilet paper her sons bedroom for his birthday. The .vast majority of tp projects are outside jobs. One group even did it to their Boy Scout . asHdu "' i V ! T " ' ' ' .'.' 1 .' . The phenomenon makes newcomers to the area a bit wary of their neighbors. leaders tent. Parental reaction to discovering a yard adorned with white, pink and yellow paper is varied-Th- e majority of parents see it as a slightly annoying phenomenon, which is bearable as long as their children clean up the mess. Woe to the pranksters, however, if it rains on the paper or they overdo the number of visits. Some adults who are new to the Ogden area or who suspect the tp attack was done for malicious reasons, have a different attitude. Ive lived in a lot of places and Ive never seen yards toilet papered before, said one adult. I think it is a form of vandalism and an invasion of private property. Another parent believes it is a destructive activity and a poor use of time. She thinks it makes the neighbor- hood a mess because some homeowners never clean up the toilet paper. Naturally, young people are almost unanimous in their delight over inflicting or receiving a tp extravaganza. They stress the vast majority of toilet papering incidents are done to people they like. Kids say they rarely do it to homes of people they do not know. As for people they dislike, more malicious pranks are usually employed such as egg throwing. Parents and teachers generally confirm these remarks, but one teacher said he used to get tpd after giving hard tests. Tp artists usually begin their first visits when they are 11 or 12 and continue through their senior year in high school. Its easier for the older kids because they have cars and arent so limited inwhere they can go, said one adolescent. Plans are often hatched at school or during slumber parties to coincide with birthdays or school celebrations. Optimum raiding hours are after 11:30 since residents are asleep and are less likely to hear the p toilet papering crews non-sto- giggling. If the person or event is really special, kids have used over 20 rolls of paper. The usual amount seems to be less than five- - Techniques vary, but a house with numerous trees is especially cherished because kids get to zing the rolls up in the air and hopefully over the tree to a friend waiting on the other side. Its really exciting when the roll gets stuck in the tree and we have to climb up to get it, said one young woman. Another exciting and frightening aspect is the possibility of being spotted by the homeowner. One group was caught and the parents told them to wait until they got lawn chairs so the family could watch the fun. Another parent said her son woke up, watched the pranksters tp his yard and then went back to sleep..
