Show I.akt'iilf lte Mall Is Mini Community, Says Merchants Association Chief Layton Hills Mall speaks for the future of Davis County, according to Mall Association President and ZCMI Manager Tom Whitesides. It wouldnt be here if it couldnt be supported, he said. Whitesides has lived in Layton for 34 years and has watched the area grow. He believes in the mall, he said, and thinks it is a positive development for Layton and for Davis County. Before the mall was there, people would spend a lot of money in Salt Lake City and Ogden because there wasn't enough variety in products to choose from, he said. But now, we offer the same products here as can be found in larger shopping centers 25 miles away, he said. Layton Hills offers medium to better its not a quality merchandise budget mall, he said. And for those quality products, you can get good prices while shopping in a pleasant environment, he said One could conceivably shop all day, starting in the morning, stopping for lunch here, shopping until dinner, eating dinner here, seeing a movie, and then stopping at the grocery story on the way home, he said. Its a mini community, he said. The mall association is comprised of a group of merchants who have combined their resources to promote the mall. They seek attractions for the store in the form of entertainment that will bring customers to the mall. Young artists, dancers, drill teams, and other local talent are invited to perform at the mall. We want to provide a forum and give experience to the young and the old. We help organizations become more successful by acting as a focal point, he said. The association also plans a boat and camper show in the near future. The mall is a natural, he said. It services Bountiful, Centerville, Farmington, Kaysville, Layton, Clearfield, Sunset, Roy and everything in between. Were not trying to compete with stores from the Salt Lake City and Ogden areas. In fact, many of the stores that are located at Layton Hills Mall are also found in Salt Lake City and Ogden, he said. Another reason the mall location is a natural is because it is located in a desirable community, he said. Its an excellent place for new housing and soft industry, he said. Also, anyone needing access to Hill AFB, Freeport Center, Salt Lake City and Ogden will find the area to be a good location. Davis County is a viable and growing market, he said. In the long run, Whitesides doesnt see any major problems caused by the mall. For now, he said, one must learn how to operate a business in good times and bad times. Things look good for the future, he said. He can't think of a better place to be as far as potential for growth is concerned. We are living in a viable, growing market, and with that growth readjustment will take place. He worked in Valley Fair and University Mall. In those surrounding areas, complexes like grocery that support the mall stores, home centers and movie theaters, were springing up, where before, there were just open fields. Look at those places now, he said. The mall is an energy saver, according to Whitesides. People dont have to spend money on gas to drive away from the area any more, he said. Even if there was a sale in Salt Lake City or Ogden, the savings would be eaten up in gas costs, he said. MERCHANTS ASSOCIATION President Tom Whitesides pauses in ZCMI, where he is the manager. Layton Hills Mall .laiuinr 1. 1981, 1ac1 .115 is located in a good area, he said, one which has needed some sophisticated shopping facilities. Ott Says Mall Just Starting Funeral arrangements for Auerbachs started years ago, said Layton P. Ott, who along with three other partners built the Layton Hills Mall. We didnt create the Auerbachs problems, had, we inherited them, he said. And as for the mall, that project has not been completed, it has just begun, he said. nThe mall is a success as a whole, and as for Auerbachs it will continue under its present name under some other o name if thats what it takes, he said. I Ott and his partners, David Horn, Paul W. Mendenhall, and Robert L. Mendenhall, stepped into Auerbachs financial troubles to make sure the facility stayed there the name of Auerbachs or another name. The important either in thing, Ott said, is that the anchor store remained there. The store was given to us, you might say, he said. And asked if the mall was the reason for the stores demise, Ott said to the contrary that -- all other Auerbachs stores are being consolidated into the Layton Hills Mall location presumably the best location of any of the Auerbachs stores. We intend to keep the good name of Auerbachs, he said. ,We want to make the mall succeed in whatever way we can, he said. So we stepped in to keep the anchor store open. It has been a tough time for a lot of retailers, he said. As a consequence, merchants are suffering, he said. Our pie is no better and no worse than we projected, he said.
