Show Death Rate of New York. Tho death rate of tbe British metropolis is but 20 in 1,000 per annum, while that of New York is 26 in 1,000. As New York has nafr. ural advantages calculated to make It the most healthful city in the world, the question ques-tion to be answered is, why it is not sol The two determining causes of New York's relatively rela-tively high rate of mortality are its overcrowded over-crowded tenements and its trying c lima tie conditions, varying from those of an arctio winter to those of a tropical summer. These are r fleeted in the character of tbe diseases which account for the increased mortality of New York diphtheria and croup, diarrbetio complaints, consumption and kidney troubles. The proportion of infant deaths in New York is away beyond that in London and accounts largely for the high average of our mortality statistics. It is not encouraging to find that diphtheria aud croup, as well as kidney diseases, dis-eases, have been more fatal in the last ten years than they were in the ten years preceding. pre-ceding. Fortunately, the most fatal group of diseases consumption and diarrhetio diseases dis-eases shows a iowur rate than it did. The Epoch. |
