Show Thursday, December 17, 1959 THE VALLEY VIEW NEWS Page 6 Part 2 Kearns Census Even though 10 years old this year, Kearns is still a community of newcomers. Part II of the community development census released Saturday morning shows that 42 per cent of Kearns residents have lived there two years or less. More than half of those earning less than $3,000 a year have been in Kearns for two years or less, whereas the majority of upper income groups have lived in Kearns for three or more years. Thus Kearns seems to be continuing in its role as a fine place for new families to get their start. Half of the Catholic, Jewish and LDS members in Kearns have resided there for three to five years. The Protestants have the largest percentage and the Mormons the smallest percentage of their own members in the new arrival (less than one year in Kearns) category. Each year witnesses an increasing percentage of college trained people in the Kearns population. ' In contrast to the steady stream of new arrivals, only 3.6 per cent of the population indicated plans to leave the community within a year. As to marital' status, the census found that 84 per cent of Kearns residents 14 years and older are married. The national figure is 67.5 per cent. Less than 1 per cent of DEBT PROBLEMS? the Kearns population is current- ly divorced. As to education levels, Kearns outranks the national percentages for high school graduates and some school studies, 54 per cent post-hig- h to 33 per cent respectively. But the national figure for college graduates (6.4 per cent) almost triples the Kearns rate (2.2 per cent). The number of books read by Kearns residents was directly to family income and education. The average citizen in Kearns watches television more than 10 of any hours a week. less TV church, surprisingly, watch than church members (of all denominations). The more education, however, the less TV viewing engaged in. Strangely enough, the people who read the most books also reveal the highest percentages as TV viewers. The census, taken by volunteer enumerators during the early part of October, marked the beginning g of the phase of the Kearns community development program. Kearns is the pilot community of the states new bureau of community development. The census will be discussed in a Kearns town meeting Monday evening, Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Kearns Junior High School.
