According to reports from the United States Public Health Service, only one half the nations children under five years of age have had polio shots, even though Salk vaccine provides effective protection against crippling infantile paralysis. Children cannot be protected unless their parents show sufficient concern over their welfare to make certain they have their immunization shots, the Utah State Medical Association points out. Vaccine is available in sufficient supply, and physicians throughout the state stand ready to give the shots, it was noted. The USMA has made plain that no child need lack protection due to financial inability of parents to pay for vaccine. In Salt Lake City, the County Medical Association has cooperated in a series of clinics at which vaccinations were given to children under ten in areas where the cost of polio shots might otherwise be a hardship, and similar arrangements prevail in many other districts. Medical men point out that some parents mistakenly feel polio is no longer a health menace due to the widely reported success of the Salk vaccine. They add that, while incidence has been greatly reduced, the disease continues to threaten any youngster who has not been vaccinated against it. The 13th Ward of the Kearns North Stake have announced that their ward dinner will be held at come in 8 oz. at 89 cents, the 16 oz. the stake house Saturday, July 18, at $1.35 and the quart for $1.85.
