Show 1 i i ! Ogden Stock Show January 4th to 8th Ogden Stock Show AND VOLUME 1 City Commissioners OF CONSTRUCTION WORK IN WEST Slash 1927 Budget by Sixty Thousand Tlie Utah Construction Company Leads National Concerns In Empire Iiuilding; Local Concern Leads On Many Projects Ogden Imard of commissioners have cut down the budget for the new year to the amount of $GG,189.50, according to the decision reached by the board after more than two weeks consideration of the budget. The amount of the budget for 1927 will be as compared with $858,409.60 for the last year. The necessity of taking some action to provide for the caring of a sinking fund for the payment of interest and part of the principal upon bonds was one of the matters of the budget that was given careful attention. The new budget will eliminate the carrying out of some of the proposed Kblicwillimprovements for the year. mean that there will be no Washington avenue improvement, such as resurfacing, lighting, curbing and guttering as was proposed by Commissioner II. W. Peery: the grand' stand at Lorin Farr park will not be moved to the west side of the park next year; there will be no new paving, sidewalks, curbing and guttering or any street improvements: no money will be spent upon the citys property in South Fork canyon; the salary of the city engineer is cut to $250 per month; one man each from the city treasurers office and the city engineers office; supplies for the various departments were reduced, and the city decided to make no further purchase of the stock of the Ogden Bench canal. The commission cut a total of $32,300 from the budget submitted as an empire builder and developer. Its fame has been extended into Can- ada and Mexico. It is one of the very few western companies that has carried on development work under the flags of three nations. There is not a western railroad but what has had much of its betterment work and development done bp the Utah Construction company. William II. Wattis, the founder and present president and general manager of the company, is one of the best informed men in the country upon railroad building and general .construction of reclamation and municipal projects, With his brothers, Edward 0. Wattis and Warren L. Wattis, the present chief organized the company in the curly 90s. The Wattis brothers have seen the company grow from a small company, which took upon railroad construction, to the largest construction company in the United States, if not in the world. In addition to their extensive equipment yards in Ogden and near San Francisco, the company owns a ranch in Nevada, in which the state of Rhode Island could almost be snuggly placed. 'On this ranch, the company runs its horses and other livestock that go to make up the great construction sub-contra- lion this ranch are ects. One of the principl company which has won for it national fame is the promptness with which it "moves onto the job, and the dispatch with which the work is carried on. Within a few hours after signing of the contract for work, the company has had its equipment on the spot for the beginning of the work. .. The general office of the company, in the Eccles building in Ogden, receives daily reports, data on the progress, and other reports from the army of foremen and others in charge of the various projects. In addition to the great amount of mail matter, the company keeps in close touch with the "jobs by telephone and .telegram. During the few minutes that Secretary Warren L. Wattis was giving to a newspaper man recently, he received a telephone call from the reclamation work at Guernsey, Nebraska; talked with the company's office in San Francisco; received telephone call from Bingham, Utan; received a tele gram from Lester Corey, in charge of the work of railroad building in Mexico, and a telegram from the Gibson, Montana, reclamation project at Augusta, Montana, near the Canadian border. The two telegrams were in code, and reported upon the progress of the work. In addition to the reports, there were calls for supplies. In Mexico, the companys representatives asked for the immediate shipment of a quantity of mosquito bar, while Montana employes requested heavy mackinaws or timbermens 'I 1 S NUMBER Ogden Livestock Show Opens Tuesday With Great Displays OGDEN LOSES ITS at- t Twenty-firs- Rod-ma- most suitable for stoves, iron pipe (Continued on lage Four) Records Smashed at to be Ogdens New Ogden Postoffice In Holiday Rush Recreation Center OGDENS LEADING ATTRACTIONS Years Eve Week Iteg.
