Show THE BEE. Nero Fiddled While Rome Burned, but He Hadnt the Accompanist Clark Has. vengeful people, a vicious, desperate, treacherous government. It has been shown beyond much doubt that the warship was deliberately destroyed by the explosion of a submarine mine placed in the harbor by order of the Spanish government. No one believes that the trap was laid for this particular ship, but there are evidently magazines in those waters arranged by the Spanish military authorities, the secret location and operation of which are known only to men entrusted with such information by the Spanish government. The shock of that explosion, the cowardly assassination, the boast of Spanish officials before and after the accident, the fact that submarine mines are operated by men clothed in authority and vested with the gravest responsibility, were enough to arouse the patriotic indignation of this country. But the discretion, the judgment of the American people, contrasted with the tone of the Spanish press, the howling of the Spanish mob, the winking and blinking of the Spanish government, reflect great credit upon American tolerance and temperance. Yet President J. M. Tanner of the Agricul. tural College evidently doesnt like the American way of doing things. With the turbulent conduct of the French during the Dreyfus investiga- clamor of the Spanish tion, the people for a fight, the buldosing attitude of Emperors and European powers before him he turns upon this government with a criticism of its policy and declares that the United States seems like a big boy going about with a chip on his shoulder hunting an antagonist ; we have no ground for our railing accusations against Spain. We are declaring war He says further: now, on the irresponsible evidence of an irresponsible diver, who had had no orders to keep blood-thirst- y his information until called to give it in the proper court of inquiry. He pays his respects to Congress and to the Instead of newspapers of America by saying : our foreign relations being determined by the chief executive, the members of the senate and of the house are taking them all out of his hands, and trotting about to Cuba and elsewhere to see about it themselves aud they are backed by an irresponsible press this is another dauger. The government ought to take steps to increase President Tanners salary. His patriotism should not go unrewarded. For he surely spoke his honest sentiments and The Bee likes to hear men who are identified with government institutions express their opinions. Some men are able to beat almost any card game they go up against. Life Lesson. cold They generally rely upon a deck, a mark of their own on the cards, or the lack of skill in an opponent. But a raw Rich county youth by the name of Hyrum Norris ran up against a sure thing the other day and won the game although the cards were against him, they were marked by his adversary and Norris had no time to ring in a hold out. It seems that a party of Rich county hunters started across the hills last week looking for game when a gun was accidently discharged. The ball was on its way to Norriss heart, but it encountered a pack of cards in his pocket, spent its force among them, and a life that old Death seemed about to win was saved to the man who staked it. This ought to have a salutary effect on young Norris ; he will surely see the error of his ways and quit the pernicious habit of carrying such things in his pocket. His experience may also serve as a warning to other young men. Fate is an eccen tric teacher whose lessons are not always easy to master. ANNOUNCEMENT.
