This October Steans won first runner up for Miss Utah USA. She came to Westminster three years ago from upstate New York to play basketball. After her freshman year she decided to leave the game she loves and focus on school. Steans never thought about being in a beauty pageant. Everything started by chance. I was shopping and a pageant rep asked ifIve everconsidered it, Steans From there she did a little research on the Miss USA pageant. I went on Facebook and got a lot of information, she said. Then there was an informational meeting telling interested contestants about costs, sponsorships, requirements and expectations. After the first meeting Steans called her parents and said she was going to go for it. Her mother, Tami Steans, was completely surprised. Tami Steans said, I thought to myself, does she know what shes getting into? Then I was worried about her walking in high heels. The first step to getting to the Miss Utah USA pageant was winning Miss Sugar House. To be Miss Sugar House, an application and pictures are submitted to the Director of Miss Utah USA Jessica Whitehead. Then Whitehead hand picks the applicant who wall compete as Miss Sugar House in the Miss Utah USA Pageant. A few days after submitting her application, Steans received an email saying she was Miss Sugarhouse. . Next it was off to the big show. On Oct. 22 and 23, the Miss Utah Pageant was underway in Ogden at the Egyptian Theater. Being a first time pageant contestant, Steans didnt know what to expect. I was extremely nervous. I just pretended like I wasnt in my swimsuit. Another aid for her nerves was advice she received from her mother before the pageant. No, the famous Broadway musical is not coming to 1840 South 1300 East. Westminster has a cat problem. Cats have long been a part of campus life, Karen Hendry, senior administrative assistant and veterans coordinator said, In my 24 years of working at Westminster College, there have been at least 40 stray cats that we have come across and at least 28 before the year 1985. These stray cats hide under the buildings for warmth in the winter and end up staying through the spring to produce more cats. These cats may come to Westminster because of the aviation program and the small class sizes. No one knows exactly why the cats come, but it is believed their moms drop them off or they take the UTA bus. In a sort of cat and mouse game, students and staff try to capture the stray cats. The goal is to neuter and vaccinate the cats before they have more kittens and thus add to our class size as well as our parking and on campus housing problems. Neutering and spaying a cat is critical for many reasons. It prevents unwanted litters and eliminates sexual frustration, something that should be eradicated from all college campuses. A cat goes into a week of heat three times a year. During that time a cat can cry continuously, display nervous behavior and approach other male cats wanting more than walk on the beach. Repeated heats without mating can cause health problems for stray cats. The two most recent on campus cats were gray tabbies. The first cat found and captured on campus was a less wild cat. After this cat was caught, he was immediately taken home by a staff member as a pet. The second cat was a kitten. While students and staff were trying to catch the cat to give her a safe home, this kitten was pampered everyday with snacks from Shaw excited. Steans then breezed her way into the Top Five. It was unreal, her mother said of the pageant. Steans said, I was announced first for Top Five so I wasnt so nervous. In the Top Five the contestants have to answer three questions. Since she was announced first Steans had to answer first. Steans said, In the pageant world, its better to be toward the end so the judges remember more of what you said. It would have been nice to have more time to think about my answers, but it turned out okay. After all was said and done, Steans thought about competing again. Right after the pageant, I wasnt sure. Steans said. There is a pageant in Orlando, FI. for the first runner up contestants from each state. That competition should be really competitive, Steans said. Steans will have the support of her family the whole way. Her mother said, Im very excited. Its a new avenue for her to do something completely different.
