The senate chaplain chap-lain thanked heaven for peace and prayed that peace may bo preserved to this nation and to the great family of nations. The lirst paper presented was the. report from the secretary of state In reply to the senate resolution as to the Mexican awards under the convention of lstlS. Secretary Blaine's report gives the full amount of the awards as 13,865,000, all of which were paid by Mexico in accordance with the terms of the convention. Unanimous consent asked in the house to discharge the committee on judiciary from further consideration of the resolution instructing in-structing that committee to investigate the action of the Piukerton detective agency, objected to. The house then resumed the consideration of the bill providing for public printing and the binding and distribution of public docu. meuts. lilaine Ag.tin 111. WASHINGTON, .Inn. 19. Secretary Mlaine while at the cabinet meeting today experienced experi-enced another attack of indigestion accompanied accom-panied With nausea and felt so uncomfortable uncomfort-able that he left the meeting and went out riding. The secretary had not been at Uie meeting more than a half hour when he complained of nausea and said he felt weak and faint. He suggested that he had belter go home and Secretary Atkins agreed to go with him. They drove to Mr. Blaine's house and his regular physician w as soon in attendance. The attack was somewhat similar to the one of a fortnight ago hut not nearly so serious and yielded much more readily to treatment. It is not likely to have any serious or permanent per-manent effect. Wailing for Chicago. Washington', Jan. 10. The contest fo j the democratic national convention is becoming be-coming quite interesting and the attitude of Chicago is the subject much of anxiety ! among the competing delegations. The Now York, Sun Francisco and Detroit delegations will all arrive during the day, and each will unquestionably make a strong light for the convention. Salt Lake City's Request Cut Down. Washington, Jan. 10. The following bills for the erection of public buildings w ith the amounts appronriated in each case were favorably reported by Senator Carey to the senate today: Reducing to $200,000 the amount for a public building nt Salt Lake City; appropriating 1800,000 for a building i at Helena, Mont., and 1200,000 for a building ! at Ogden, Utah. To Abolish ihe Sold standard. Washington, Jan. 19. Representative simp-on of Kansas introduced a bill amend-ing amend-ing the act of February 18, lN.s, by striking out the words providing that gold shall be the unit of value of American coin. The negative effect of this bill is to repeal the law establishing gold as the standard of value. Pensioners Must lie Citizens. Washington, Jan. 19. The bill on the subject of pensions introduced in the house by Representative Newberry of Illinois provides pro-vides that hereafter no pensions shall be paid any person not a citizen and a bona fide resi. dent of the United States.
