The event, sponsored by National Institute of Fitness, was held in the Cox Auditorium of the Dixie College Campus in St. George. Participants, all over SO, competed in three categories; dead lift, squat and bench lift. Dr. Rick Herrick, an orthopedic surgeon from Opeliha, Alabama garnered the gold with a best shot total of more than 1,200 lbs. for die combination. Gent, who says he is not a world-clapower lifter, added a little strategy to his strength. Although he usually lifts in the 181 lb. class, he decided to pick up a few pounds and move into the 198 lb. class on the outside chance that not all competitors would be able to do all three lifts. The tactic paid off. "I'm no where near a world class power lifter in all three events, but I am in shape to compete in all of them," he explained. His dead lift and squat, each at 27S lbs., and bench at 155 lbs., for a combination total of 705 earned a solid 2nd place standing, proving the value of general health and fitness. Track and field events are Gent's actual field of expertise, and " 6:00 P.MJ he wifi return to St George for that competition. His philosophy is, "If you stick with it long enough for the law ofaverages to be on your side, anyone can be a champion. " However, health benefits from proper exercise makes everyone a winner.
