Judge's choice ribbons and awards may be given. Miss Grand County Pageant returns The Miss Grand County pageant had its return debute sponsored by this years Grand County Fair. Its the first pageant associated with the Fair in over 10 years. It was held at the Grand County High School Auditorium Friday, August 9, 2002. As an opening to the pageant the Woman of Achievement award was presented to Carol Hines (with a $ 00 a ward) for all she has done for the community. The two other women that were given recognition for their efforts in the community were Martha Leonard and Lenore Arehart. After the tears and applause had stopped for the three woman of achievement that stood on stage for their recognition the pageant began. First up was an opening dance routine, followed by the talent portion from each contestant. Then the final task of presenting evening wear 1 and answering a question. The question was: How has the recent tragedy of 91 1 changed your personal life, and how has it affected your relationship with friends, family and others. A tough question to answer, especially on the spot, but all the answer. contestants gave a heart-fe- lt Once the judges were finished with their scoring die winners were announced. Second runner up was Monica Arehart, 20, daughter of Michael and Ann Arehart. She is a student at Southern Utah University, where she is studying sports medicine and physical therapy. She earned her associates degree from Snow College. She is learning Spanish, and enjoys poetry, music and sports. She is developing a program for the extended care unit at Allen Memorial Hospital in Moab. The first runner up was Emma Welling, 18, daughter of Edward and Elaine Welling. She is a 2002 graduate of Grand County High School, where she was a valedictorian. Shell be attending Utah State University this fall, and plans to earn her bachelor's degree in piano performance from USU before transferring to Oberlin Conservatory for her masters. She earned 30 hours of college credit while in high school. She plays both the piano and the violin and She also enjoys was a music Sterling Scholar runner-umaking afghans and helped train her family's German p. shepherd. Fair spans more than just one week! event The Grand County fair is not just a but this year. True, most of the fair runs September 20-2thats not all. The Miss Grand County Fair competition was held Friday August 9. Also Saturday September 14, there is a sanctioned Horseshoe competition happening at Old City Park at 10:30 a m. There will be big prizes, and people from all over the USA will conic to Moab for this horseshoe event. A BMX competition sponsored by Poison Spider will be happening on Saturday September 2 1 at 10 a m. outside the Old Spanish Trail Arena. As well as the Little Britches Rodeo that will be here for the first time during the last day of the Fair and running one day over, September 2 and 22. Opening night September 20, 2002 will kick off the event with the rock and roll band Firefall, well known for their number one hits like You are the Woman andJust Remember I Love You." Opening for Firefall will be Emerson Nakai and the White Ridge Singers performing a PowWow exhibition similar to the one performed at the opening ceremonies for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Tickets for the concert are $ 2 and are available at the gate or online at www.grandcountyfair.com The Fair will open its gates at I p.m. Friday Sept. 20 with a free carnival for the kids and food booths galore. To satisfy the hungry there will be Navajo tacos, roasted com on the cob, hamburger and hot dogs, barbequed beef, pork and nbs, pizza, cotton candy, Indian fry bread, home baked goods and much more available. To honor Grand Countys pioneer heritage, Dixon Ford is bringing his team of Oxen, each weighing 2600 lbs. His group will be attired in 1847 period dress and havea surrey. Between 847and 869, 75 percent of all pioneers came to Utah by oxen team. Children will be able to have their picture taken on top of one of the giant oxen. Any adult brave enough will be able to try to drive the oxen team with voice only commands. Among many activities, participants will be able to enter our fun competitions on Saturday Sept. 21 beginning until 5 p.m.. at 9 Aa.m. and continuing every half-hou- r pie eating, water melon eating and seed spitting, arm wrestling, the best red head and even the best Chili cook off will be among many competitions for visitors to enter. Looking on is Emma Welling, Miss Grand County first runnerup Miss Grand County for 2002 was Rindy Engleman, 22, daughter of David and Mary Engleman. She earned an associates degree in business administration from Snow College and a bachelor of science degree in business management from Southern Utah University. Shes now i, where shes furthering her education at studying travel and tourism. She sings and plays the piano and violin, and also enjoys dancing, especially country swing. She is a certified river guide, ski instructor, and scuba diver. I feel that I can help my community by doing random acts of kindness and service for our elderly, she said. The winner of the Miss Grand County title will be awarded $ 1 ,500 in college scholarship money, with another $750 going to the first attendant and $500 to the second attendant. In addition, $100 prizes were offered in four special award categories: Interview (Rindy Engleman), Talent (Emma Welling), Photogenic (Stephanie Lopez) , and Congeniality (Rebecca Francis).
